Biography

Dr. Alex Belohlavek is the Director of Choral Activities at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he also teaches music theory, aural skills, and other academic courses. With over a decade of conducting and teaching experience, he has worked with middle school, high school, college, sacred, and community ensembles of all ages.

Dr. Belohlavek holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Susquehanna University, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Music from the University of Southern California. His conducting experience includes ensembles at the Jim Henson Academy of Visual & Performing Arts, the California School of the Arts, the National Children’s Chorus of Los Angeles, and collegiate choirs at USC and USM. He has also served as a conductor and vocalist in both Christian and Jewish sacred settings.

Passionate about new choral music, Dr. Belohlavek has premiered works by Tõnu Kõrvits, Nico Muhly, Richard Burchard, and most recently, Color All Maps New, an eight-movement a cappella choral work by New Orleans composer Dylan Tran.

Outside of music, Dr. Belohlavek enjoys climbing and backpacking and feels most at home in the mountains.
