Northwest names Tim Garrett next Director of Bands

Northwest Mississippi Community College is pleased to announce that the college has welcomed Mr. Tim Garrett as the next Director of Bands. Garrett, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, and a Forest Hill High School graduate comes to Northwest Mississippi with 21 years of experience leading musical ensembles in schools across Mississippi.

As a Forest Hill High school student, Garrett excelled in music and always enjoyed helping others in the music classroom. His leadership among his classmates influenced a career choice after counseling with his then high school band director, Zachary Harris, another long-time music educator in Mississippi. Even though Garrett has spent the last 14 years on the Mississippi coast, he is no stranger to north Mississippi. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi, and his family is originally from Tate County.

Jeff Triplett, Northwest District Director of Fine Arts, said, "We are very excited about Tim Garrett joining us as the Director of Bands here at Northwest. Tim brings a wealth of experience and a track record of successful, award-winning bands." Since Garrett began teaching, his bands have consistently received all-superior ratings with sweepstakes designation in concert, sight-reading, and marching band performance. Garrett has taken Mississippi students to the national stage on many occasions. He is the only band director in Mississippi history to have been on staff with performing ensembles at this trio of national musical events: the Midwest International Clinic, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Tournament of Roses Parade.

When asked about his future in North Mississippi, Garrett said, "My family and I are very excited about the wonderful opportunity to come on board at Northwest and continue to grow the outstanding band program. I am excited about working with the great music staff, the students, Dr. Heindl, and his administrative team, also developing a partnership with the great high school band programs located in Northwest Mississippi."

"Northwest's band program is set for great success," said Garrett. Next year the band will receive new uniforms and instruments. The students are excited about the new things coming to the college, most notably moving into the brand-new Performing Arts Center in Senatobia with state-of-the-art rehearsal, performance, and teaching spaces. "This is a first-class institution focused on the success of its students. This college has made a tremendous investment in its students; I can't wait to get started."

Garrett is a member of many professional organizations, including the Gulf Coast Band Director's Association, the Mississippi Bandmasters Association, the National Band Association, the American School Band Director's Association, and Phi Beta Mu. He has received the acclaimed NBA "Citation of Excellence," was named 2013 Gulf Coast Band Director of the Year, and STAR Teacher in 2016, 2018, and 2021. Garrett will be moving to Northwest with his wife, Stephani, and two children, Alyssa Claire and Alex.

Garrett will officially start July 1st at Northwest. Still, he will be working behind the scenes to help the next recruiting class of music students join the excitement on campus.
