Student Support Services

I need a tutor for my class. How do I get a tutor?
Student Support Services has tutors available for participants in the program. Tutors are available for general education core courses. To receive tutorial services, participants must fill out a Tutor Request Form. Participants are assigned a tutor on a first-come, first-served basis. Tutoring sessions take place in the SSS learning lab or a pre-arranged location.

Do I have to be in SSS to receive tutoring or other services that they offer?
Yes.  You must have completed paperwork on file in our office as a SSS participant to receive tutoring.

Do you hire students as tutors?
Yes. Students are hired as tutors for our participants.  Interested students must exhibit academic excellence in equivalent courses and/or excellent ACT scores.   A Tutor Application Form must be completed and submitted to the SSS Office. If positions are available and you are approved by the NWCC Personnel Office, you will be contacted by SSS staff for tutor orientation.

What services and activities does Student Support Services provide to participants?
Student Support Services provides academic and career advising, tutorial services, assistance with communicating with various offices and departments on campus, academic and cultural events (on and off campus), workshops, learning laboratory, and the opportunity to build social ties and networks.

Are all students eligible for Student Support Services?
No. Student Support Services is a federally funded TRIO program established to assist first-generation and/or low-income or students with disabilities in reaching their educational goals. To participate in the program, each student must first complete an application form. An assessment of the student’s ability to benefit from services is completed once the application is received. Our program is limited to 165 participants per year. Applicants may be placed on a waiting list to ensure maximum participation.

What does first-generation mean?
First generation means that neither parent has a four-year college degree. First-generation is one of the eligibility requirements for SSS. First-generation status can also be determined based on the status of only the primary legal guardian

How is financial need determined?
Financial need is based on guidelines published by the U. S. Department of Education each year. Students are required to have adequate documentation on file in the Financial Aid Office before selection based on the financial need criteria can be made.

How is a disability status determined?
Students must be registered with the Disability Coordinator for NWCC or provide official documentation to the SSS director.

Does SSS offer any financial assistance?
Yes. SSS provides grant aid annually to a select number of active participants who meet the requirements. Please contact a SSS staff member for more details.

Where can I apply for Student Support Services?
Application forms are available in the Student Support Services office located in the McLendon Union Building, 2nd Floor, Room 202.  Office hours are M-F 8:00 – 4:30 p.m. You are invited to call, email, or schedule a visit with any SSS staff member. Applications are also available on the NWCC SSS website.

Receive Tutoring

The tutorial program is a FREE academic support service for Student Support Services participants on the Senatobia campus.  Those interested in receiving tutoring should complete a Tutor Request Form.  The SSS Office Manager coordinates the tutor/tutee arrangements after interviewing the student to determine needs and expectations. All tutoring is subject to tutoring availability.

Become a Tutor
Tutors are carefully selected students who have achieved a high level of success in the course or discipline in which they are tutoring. Those interested in becoming a tutor should complete a Tutor Application. If positions are available and you are approved by the NWCC Financial Aid Office, you will be contacted by the SSS Office Manager.

Samanthia Bradley – Transfer Specialist Manager

Our on-staff Transfer Specialist works one-on-one with SSS participants:

• In making sure that the NWCC course curriculum they are taking will transfer to their particular major of study at the 4-year university
• Takes participants on university campus tours introducing them to key offices to help participants transition smoothly
• Provides a liaison between NWCC and the 4-year university
• Assists with university applications and financial aid applications
• Educates students on final steps needed to transfer

There are two ways a student can transfer to a 4-year university from Northwest Mississippi Community College:

1.  Complete 30-hours of core courses from the community college listed below with a grad of “C” or higher in those courses:
   •  English Composition – 6 semester hours
   • College Algebra, Quantitative Reasoning, or a higher level math – 3 semester hours
   • Natural Science – 6 semester hours
   • Humanities and Fine Arts – 9 semester hours
   • Social or Behavioral Sciences – 6 semester hours
2. Or Earn an A.A. degree from  the community college with a 2.0 GPA
