Donating appreciated assets—such as stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares, or certain real estate—may allow you to make a greater impact while receiving potential tax advantages.
When appreciated assets are donated directly rather than sold, you may avoid recognizing capital-gains tax on the appreciation. If the gift meets applicable requirements, you may also qualify for a charitable income-tax deduction based on the asset’s fair market value. Deduction amounts and limitations depend on several factors, including the type of asset, how long you have owned it, and your individual tax situation.
Before selling an appreciated asset that you intend to use for a charitable gift, contact the Northwest Foundation so the asset can be transferred directly.
