SPECIAL POPULATIONS STUDENTS
WHO ARE THEY: Disadvantaged or Disabled Career Technical Students
The primary goal of the Special Populations Division is to enable students to overcome any barriers to success in their chosen area of study.
DISADVANTAGED
- Academically Disadvantaged: Below 11th grade-level in basic skills (identified by testing)
- Economically Disadvantaged: Receive a Pell Grant or other Federal/State assistance
- Limited in English language proficiency
- Non-traditional gender for program
- Single parents, including single pregnant women
- Displaced homemakers
DISABLED
- Non-graduates of high school, certificate diploma recipients, or drop-outs
- Students who are physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically challenged
SPECIAL POPULATIONS SERVICES
- Assistance in completing applications for admission, financial aid housing, etc.
- Adaptation of curriculum, instruction, equipment and facilities, if needed.
- Facilitation of transition from secondary to post-secondary to work after completion of program.
- Assistance in academic skills related to program.
- Coordination of counseling and career guidance with career counselors.
- Consultation with academic instructors to ensure integration of learning and modifications needed for students with disabilities.
- Arrangement for tutoring through Student Support Services for academic subjects that Special Populations personnel are unable to provide.
- Coordination of services with the Director of Disability Support Services, who is responsible for all students with disabilities campus wide.
