ECET program now utilizing new state-of-the-art facility
When college administrators started the “Building on Tradition” program in 2007 and considered plans for a new Early Childhood Education Technology facility, few could have predicted just how big of an impact those plans would have on all those involved. Located on the southern part of the Northwest campus, the ECET facility serves as a teaching facility for students in the program, providing them with experience and knowledge needed to enter the workforce or to continue their education.
Also reaping the benefits of the new building are the three and four year old children enrolled in the Child Enrichment Center—the laboratory school associated with the program.
ECET majors are prepared for a variety of career paths including being a director/owner of a daycare, teacher at a public school, tutor, or nanny to name a few. Dr. Alice Camp, lead instructor for the program, and instructor Judy Barham teach the classes in the curriculum. Penny Potts serves as the laboratory assistant—supervising the care of the children enrolled in the center.
Each day the Northwest students are involved in planning two snacks and a noon meal for the children. They also get experience planning crafts and activities and being involved in the daily supervision.
Before this new facility opened, Northwest students took classes in the Berry Building, and then walked to the Child Enrichment Center on Thompson Street. Instructors went back and forth between the two locations all day. They are thrilled to all be in one location, according to Camp.
