After being found near the Physical Plant Sept. 2, the great horned owl spent days recuperating at the Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation (MWR) facility near Lake Cormorant.
"The owl is doing great!” said Valery Smith, executive director, in her second report.“She is eating well on her own and is flying in the smaller flight. She needs to build her strength up, so I will keep her a bit longer before I get her back down to her habitat.”
Days after that report, Smith was joined by personnel at the Physical Plant as the owl was released into her natural surroundings.
On hand for the release was Groundsworker Henry Pipkin who discovered the owl. Al Carrington, plumbing and underground utilities worker, reported the owl to the rehabilitation facility. That was not his first experience with wild animal rescue.
“It gives me peace of mind when we find the little critters around here,” said Carrington. “I’d brought two racoons to MWR last year.”
