Nursing dedicationA dedication of the new Nursing Building took place April 19 with more than 200 guests attending the grad opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, including Senatobia citizens and Northwest students and faculty. The keynote speakers were U.S. Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker. “It was their (the college’s) dream that this building come to be built,” Sen. Wicker stated. “We could not have done it without the state, local, federal and private dollars. This is about healthcare; this is about education and a better quality of life.”

Northwest President, Dr. Gary Lee Spears expressed his appreciation from the building’s high portico to board members and the building committee as he welcomed the audience and introduced the senators. The opening of the dedication also featured the Northwest Singers in the singing of the national anthem. Dean of the Division of Nursing Ellen Williams recognized the groups that funded construction of the building, the various architects and construction workers who built the facility, and the Nursing faculty. “With this new building we can meet the demands of the nursing community,” Williams stated.

Freshman Nursing student Gayle Gordon was another speaker at the dedication. “These walls hold our tears of failure, laughter of success, and will forever in our hearts be our second home,” Gordon stated.

Associate Vice President of Development and Special Projects Sybil Canon recognized the generosity of donors who have established Foundation scholarships for Nursing students and who contributed funds to providing some of the equipment and furnishings in the new building.

After the ribbon cutting, guests were given tours of the new building and refreshments. Adjunct instructor James Tesar stated, “The building has a very positive effect on our campus.”

“The building will greatly impact the students; it is always good to have the latest technology,” stated Shokea Miller, a nurse at Methodist University Hospital.
