BBQ cook-off held May 5

BBQStudents found it hard to study for exams with the sweet smell of barbeque in the air as Northwest hosted the 3rd annual Northwest BBQ Cookoff May 5 in the south parking lot of Howard Coliseum.

The BBQ Cookoff, created by Drafting and Design Technology Instructor Tim Chavez, featured a variety of Northwest faculty, administration, staff, and even student clubs. Categories for the event included pork, ribs, poultry, wild game, and “anything butt.”

“The event started three years ago as a friendly competition between several of the Career-Tech programs, since many of them would occasionally grill lunch from time to time,” said Chavez, who served as event director for this year’s competition. “We thought it would be fun to have the different programs grill lunch on the same day and have some judges finally put to rest the argument of which program could prepare the better tasting meal.”

However, it wasn’t until last year that the event was opened to other campus clubs and faculty. Chavez hopes the event will expand in the future. “Our great vision is that one day the event might expand beyond the campus to include the community as well.

The underlying purpose of the BBQ is as a fundraiser to help support the Northwest SkillsUSA student organization. Every year the Career-Technical Division represents Northwest in the state’s Skills USA championships, and all state gold medal winners progress to the national championships.” Gold medalists travel to Kansas City, Mo., in June to compete at the SkillsUSA National Competition against winners from the other 49 states.
