Ten students inducted into 2010 Hall of FameHOF
By: S.A. Umberger

Ten students have been inducted into the Northwest Hall of Fame and were honored at the Northwest Board of Trustees meeting on Feb. 11.

Students chosen from the Senatobia campus are Annah Bailey, Laina Collier, Jonathan Fix and Anna Lorraine Mullinaux. Those chosen from Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center are Jill K. Schmidt and Teresa Anne Pass.

Included from the DeSoto Center are Christopher Adam Bennett, Shannon Marie Daniel, Holly Hale Koonce and Brian Matthew Burgess.

“Election to the Hall of Fame is the highest honor that a Northwest student can receive,” said Dr. Marilyn Bateman, academic dean.  “This year’s group of students is one of the finest ever.   These students not only excel in the classroom, but also provide leadership by their participation in college activities.  Students of this caliber are our society’s hope for a brighter future.”

Secondary Education major Annah Bailey of Pope is  a member of the Future Educators of America, the Mu Alpha Theta Math Society, Phi Theta Kappa, the Northwest Concert Band, the Ranger Marching Band and the Baptist  Student Union. Bailey is on the Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities list and is on the President’s list.  Her goal for the future is “to teach at Pope Junior High and be the next Meg Woods,” she said.  Full story

NWith dress rehearsals just around the corner, the cast of “West Side Story” is busy learning lines, practicing dance moves, and memorizing the music in preparation for opening day.

“West Side Story” tells the tale of young teenage love in the urban part of New York. It is compared to Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet.” It has everything from love and romance to gangs and fighting. “West Side Story” was composed by Leonard Bernstein, who was known for his difficult, advanced compositions.

The Northwest performance of this play will be held at the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus on March 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. and March 6 and 7 at 2:30 p.m.

According to Samuel Wilson (Toro) of Irving, Texas, being in a theatre production adds to the overall college experience. “At the time some friends, Dameon Danford, Cody Reynolds, and Lloyd Dixon, were in the play. They told me it was fun, so I stuck around and I ended up in the musical,” he said.

Toro is a tough character, and Wilson has enjoyed his role as Toro. According to Wilson, cast members make it fun behind the scenes for each other. Most of the cast agreed that the worst part in working on the play was their free time being taken up by all the rehearsals, but all said that the loss was well worth it in the end because of how proud they were of the play.

Stephanie Tolley-Child, freshman General College major from Southaven loves the gym scene from the play because it’s “neat to see how different the two gangs are.” She didn’t associate with those outside her “gang” to help create natural onstage “tension” between the groups.

Director of Choral Activities Susanne VanDyke, is the musical director of ‘West Side Story.’ She had plenty of praise for all those involved with the student orchestra or “the pit” saying that they have always risen to the occasion. Full story
