SSS counselor to release album in Brooklyn
By: Roykeisha Rockette

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Natasha Johnson, a counselor with Northwest’s Student Support Services department, along with her husband Thaddeus Johnson, will soon be releasing their debut album entitled “New Dimension: No Labels.”

Johnson and her husband call themselves T-N-T, which is a combination of their names, ‘Thad and Tasha’. T-N-T held an album release party at the Rumba Room in Midtown Memphis on Nov. 28 and will hold one in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 1, 2010.

T-N-T has performed for the Southern Heritage Classic, The Center for Southern Folklore, Euphoria, Dru’s Place and many more popular places and events.

“My absolute favorite part of performing is the time spent on the stage, imparting out lyrics and our message,” Johnson stated.

According to Johnson, T-N-T does not place themselves in a specific genre. They call themselves “conscious and inspirational.”

Johnson began singing at age 17 during her undergraduate year at New York University.
“I didn’t even know I could sing until I joined the school gospel choir at NYU,” she said. Later she joined the Brooklyn Tabernacle (1998-2005) and during that time helped them achieve six Grammy awards.

Having Jamaican family who came to America in the 60s and 70s, Natasha Johnson was the first one of her family to be born in the United States.

“I embrace my ‘Jamaican-ness’ much more now since I am away from my family and my culture. Now that I am a different person in a different place, it has provided me with an opportunity to use my uniqueness to set team T-N-T apart. It is something I will wholly embrace, and I will no longer take for granted,” Johnson said.

T-N-T is self-managed and can be contacted for performances at TeamTNT143@aol.com. The album can also be purchased through paypal.com.
