Three recent Northwest graduates addressed 25 current Computer Networking and Computer Programming Technology majors on the importance of specific career decisions on March 22.
Meet the Grads, an event organized by instructor Signy Givens, entails inviting recent graduates who are currently working in their field to present informal sessions for Northwest students.
Chase Terry from ADSI in Southaven, and Mike Tapp from the DeSoto Technology Group in Southaven, both graduated from Northwest in 2008. Kincaid Amoazo, a 2003 graduate who is currently employed at Faurecia in Cleveland, also addressed students.
“It helps students to look at people like them who have gone on to something better,” said Givens. “The entire purpose of this is to encourage our students, to let them see what we are doing in class is what is really being done in industry,” she said.
Graduates spoke to the students about their time and experience at Northwest, the educational choices they made afterward and how they established themselves in their current positions. They also offered advice and provided students with some helpful information that will help them succeed after graduating.
According to Givens, she has heard a lot of positive feedback from students.
“It was very informative about what I need to do to accomplish my goals for the future,” said Matthew Funderburk, a Networking major from Hernando.
“It’s not that you leave here an expert, but you leave here with a really good foundation of what to use in the real world. A lot of the classes we are teaching plug right into what they are doing at work,” said Givens.
