| Northwest Mississippi Community College administrators recently announced the promotion of Assistant Chief of Police Al Dodson to the position of chief. Dodson, who brings many years experience to the job, was named chief after former Chief Mark Kimbell left to head up the investigative division of the Olive Branch Police Department. Promoted to the position of Assistant Chief is Richard Gordon, a retired highway patrolman who has worked at Northwest for many years as a part-time officer.
“We are fortunate to have such experienced law enforcement professionals leading our Campus Police staff,” said Dan Smith, vice-president of Student Affairs “Both Al and Richard are well respected by their peers around the state, and are truly dedicated to insuring that Northwest is a safe place to study and work.”
Dodson has been with the Northwest Police Department since 1996. He served as a lieutenant under former chief Bill Moore, who passed away in April, 2007. He was named Assistant Chief of Police last July. A native of Senatobia, Dodson moved to Arizona as a child, and returned to Senatobia when he was a junior in high school. After graduating from Senatobia High School, he spent three years as a military policeman in the U. S. Army. He attended Northwest as a Business Administration major and graduated with an associate degree. He went to work for the Senatobia Police Department in 1979 and became chief of the department in 1985. He left the department in 1996 to come to Northwest. Dodson has three sons, one four-year old granddaughter, and another granddaughter on the way.
Gordon came to Northwest 10 years ago as a part-time officer. At the time, he was a full-time trooper with the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP). He spent 25 years on the MHP, retiring as a Master Sergeant, and Assistant Troop commander for Troop E in Batesville. Gordon graduated from Lafayette County High School in 1978 and attended Northwest where he studied Offset Printing. He worked in the Printing Department at the University of Mississippi until 1984, when he went to the MHP Academy. He is the father of one son, and twin daughters. He also has a deceased son.
“We are looking forward to a safe school year and the continuing support of our faculty, staff and administration,” Dodson said.
