High School Seniors Get Opportunity to “Go Northwest”
by LaJuan Tallo | 11/3/08

With graduation around the corner, many high school seniors may still be weighing their post-graduate options. Students still deciding what to do after graduation will get a chance to visit Northwest Mississippi Community College and learn about the variety of academic programs it has to offer.

The “Go Northwest” program will be held at the Senatobia campus in the David M. Haraway Center Nov. 20 and 21. Each day after registration at 8:30 a.m., Northwest student speakers approaching graduation will kick off the event by discussing their reasons for choosing Northwest and the advantages to attending a community college. Door prizes will be given at the event, including one for a two-year half-tuition scholarship to Northwest. The Northwest Entertainers and Percussion Ensemble will also perform.

At 9:30 a.m., prospective students will break into separate departments according to their programs of interest, visit the classroom facilities and hear from Northwest faculty.

This part of the program is very effective, according to Northwest Director of Recruiting Jere Herrington. “It gives students the chance to see what our classrooms look like,” Herrington said. “They get to meet faculty members, listen to them discuss programs of study and see what going to class at Northwest is all about.”

Lunch will be available for participants starting at 11 a.m. and will be followed by optional campus tours starting at 12:30 p.m.

Reservations for one of the two program days are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Academic programs featured at the event include: Accounting, Art, Allied Health, Business Administration, Communications and Public Relations, Communications and Journalism, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Exercise Science, General College, Mathematics, Music, Nursing, Pre-Pharmacy, Psychology, Speech/Theatre, Social Work and health related professions, among others.
