Northwest has several non-traditional-by- gender students enrolled in its 43 Career-Technical programs on four campuses.

Automotive repair. Civil Technology. Drafting and Design. Collision repair. Welding. These are technical, hands-on, and in most cases, very physically demanding jobs some might think only men can perform.

Northwest Mississippi Community College has at least one female enrolled in each of these fields of study. Known as non-traditional-by- gender students, the reasons each of these students chose to learn their skills vary, but they all share the common goal of proving they can do their jobs just as well as the next guy. The determination they bring to their studies more than rivals that of their male counterparts. More

Northwest Art Department to hold extended Les Fauves art sale by Nathan Gregory | 11/10/08

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Les Fauves Art Club will hold its annual holiday art sale on Dec. 4 from 6-9 p.m. and Dec. 5 from 8 a.m.- noon.

This is the first year the club is hosting the sale for two days, according to Northwest Art Department Chair Lawayne House. “Over the years many in the community have expressed a desire to attend the sale, but due to their daily work schedules could not,” he said. “That’s why this year we wanted to open the doors on Thursday evening so the community could come and enjoy the sale.”

The sale, which helps raise money for the art department, will include drawings, paintings, pottery, photographs, pen and ink drawings and watercolors. House said the sale provides a convenient and inexpensive way to collect quality original art. “The art available at the sale may be the creation of a student who may go on to be famous one day,” House said. “Supporting this sale helps support our art students and also encourages them to continue in their educational pursuits.”

House and Northwest art faculty Eunika Rogers and Ashley Chavis will each donate an original work of art for a door prize.

House said the sale showcases works of art that could be ideal holiday gifts. “Our holiday sale is a well-loved tradition at Northwest,” he said. “Art works are a great investment specifically since their value will always increase.”

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Fine Arts Division offers classes in the fundamentals of Drawing; Painting; Ceramics; Art History and Computer Graphics for individuals seeking opportunities for a career in the arts or for personal enrichment.
