Northwest wins several theatrical awards

Northwest Mississippi Community College’s theatre department earned seven Allie awards at the annual Northwest Mississippi Theatre Alliance awards banquet on Feb. 7. The event was held at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.

Northwest competes in the Community Theatre Division and took home top honors for  “Hedda Gabler” (Best Drama)  and “Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” (Best Comedy).

Sophomore Alyssa McElfresh of Senatobia won a “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical” for her portrayal of Miss Adelaide in last February’s production of “Guys and Dolls.” McElfresh also captured a “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play” for “Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.” She played Helsa Wenzel.

 

 

Jamison White, a sophomore from Horn Lake, won “Best Performance by A Featured Actor in a Play” for his portrayal of Judge Brack in “Hedda Gabler.”  Terry Scott,  Northwest Fine Arts technical director, earned two Allies. Scott was named Best Director of a Comedy for “Musical Comedy Murders of 1940’ and won Best Set for his work on “Hedda Gabler,” which he also directed.

"I'm proud of the high standards our faculty members set for themselves and for their students, and of the way they motivate their students to succeed at such high levels. Terry Scott has been an outstanding addition to our theatre department, “ said Dr. Kenneth Sipley, division director of Fine Arts.

The Northwest Division of Fine Arts will present Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Cats” at the end of the month. Showtimes are Thursday - Friday, Feb. 26-27 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the Fine Arts Auditorium. Tickets are reserved  seating and $10 and $5 for seniors and students. They are available  for purchase through Northwest's Business Office.  For information, call 662-560-5243.

Auditions for Northwest’s April production of  “Tartuffe” will be held Monday through Wednesday, March 2-4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
