NW rodeo athletes place in Ozark Region event
By Nancy Patterson | 4/7/09

After getting past the first day of threatening tornadoes, rain and mud, Northwest Rodeo Coach Lawrence "Bud" Young reports a successful three-day NIRA event at the college farm April 2-4.
"It was a challenge that first day—moving kids and livestock around due to the weather, but we got past it."

Approximately 150 student athletes from throughout the Ozark Region were on the Northwest farm property for the event. Four Northwest students placed in the event.

In Calf Roping, Cody Skelton of Holly Springs split fourth and fifth in the long go, split third and fourth in the short go, for a third in the average. Breakaway roper Shelby Anglin of Hernando made it to the short go on a ninth place, but had a no time.

In Barrel Racing, Kristin Cherry of Olive Branch was seventh in the long go, fourth in the short go, and fourth in the average. In this category, Anglin was 10th in the first round, seventh in the second and eighth in the average.

Local high school students got in on the excitement by participating in a calf scramble on Thursday and Friday nights. In the Thursday night contest, Magnolia Heights won over Senatobia, while Lewisburg was the winner in the battle with Strayhorn on Friday night.

The team finishes the year with the final rodeo at UT-Martin (Tenn.) April 16-18.

The Northwest rodeo team is comprised of men and women who participate in NIRA-sanctioned events throughout the year. For more information on the team, contact Coach Young at (662) 562-3430 or budyoung@northwestms.edu.
