Childers to speak at Northwest graduations

United States Congressman Travis Childers will be the keynote speaker at the 93rd graduation exercises held at Northwest Mississippi Community College on Friday, May 15. The ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus. The 10 a.m. ceremony will be for graduates in the college’s Career-Technical programs, and the 3 p.m. ceremony will be for those in the Academic programs.

Senator Childers

Childers first took office as the United States Representative for Mississippi’s First Congressional District in May, 2008. Childers is a member of the House Financial Services Committee, and serves as the only member from the Mississippi delegation on the House Agriculture Committee. He helped to re-establish and is now co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Rural Caucus.

Before coming to Congress, he served as Chancery Clerk in Prentiss County. He was elected in 1991, and re-elected to a fifth term in 2007 with 75 percent of the vote. From 2001-2002, he was chosen by his peers to serve as president of the Mississippi Chancery Clerks Association.

For the past 16 years, he has owned Travis Childers Realty and Associates, a real estate firm in northeast Mississippi.

He attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College and the University of Mississippi and received a degree in Business Administration in 1980. Before he graduated, he became a licensed realtor and joined the real estate firm of Robert Davis.

Childers has been married for 28 years to the former Tami Gibson. He and his wife have two children, Dustin, a second-year law student at Mississippi College, and Lauren, a sophomore at The University of Mississippi. They are all members of East Booneville Baptist Church.

He and his wife are also the owners of Landmark Community, a personal care home, and Landmark Nursing Center, an 80-bed skilled care facility and Alzheimer’s unit.
