Cheerleading tryouts scheduled for Northwest

Tryouts for the Northwest Mississippi Community College Cheerleading Squad will be held on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18 at Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus, according to Pam Wooten, cheerleader sponsor. The deadline to apply is Monday, April 13.

The Friday session will be held from 5-8 p.m. The Saturday session will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those interested in trying out must attend both sessions. A cheer tryout registration form must be completed, Wooten stated.

The Northwest Cheerleading squad is a non-competing all girl squad.  The squad cheers at football games and at all home basketball games. 

Practices are held on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. There are eight positions available for base cheerleaders, four for back spots and four for flyers. Scores will be kept in three separate categories and the best in each category will make the squad.

Points will be awarded on fitness, performance of the Northwest fight song and a cheer, a toe touch and stunting. The fight song and cheer will be taught at the Friday night session. Additional points will be based on current or most recent cheer sponsor’s recommendation.

Scholarships are available for all students who make the squad. 
Scholarships are $1,000 per semester for those who live on campus, and $850 per semester for those who commute.
