Mississippi poet to visit Northwest

Mississippi author and poet Patricia Neely-Dorsey will be on hand for a book signing and discussion at the R.C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College on May 5 at 2:30 p.m., according to Maggie Moran, public service and reference librarian. Neely-Dorsey will be signing her book “Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia: A Life in Poetry,” which was published in February 2008 by Grant House Publishers. Full story


Summer School sessions set for Northwest

Northwest Mississippi Community College is offering two summer school terms this year, with the first term beginning on Thursday, May 28 and ending on Thursday, June 25. Registration for the first term day classes is Friday, May 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Full story


"Teachers open the door. You enter by yourself.” 

A Chinese proverb goes: “Teachers open the door. You enter by yourself.”  Such is the case for Shani Smith of Southaven.

When Smith was a student at Northwest Mississippi Community College, Leah Arrington, her accounting instructor called her to the side and told her she had a talent for accounting. Arrington encouraged her to consider accounting as a major and sent her to talk to Dr. Marilyn Bateman, the academic dean, who also encouraged her. Smith changed her major and has since completed her associate degree and bachelor’s degree in accountancy through the 2+2 program at Northwest and the University of Mississippi at the DeSoto Center. She is now an accounting professional in Memphis. Full Story


Northwest adult education instructors nominated as START trainers

Two Northwest Mississippi Community College Adult Basic Education (ABE)/GED instructors have been nominated to become certified as Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) teacher  trainers. Vickie Barksdale of Senatobia and Amy Savage of Sardis were among 19 trainer candidates nominated by state leadership and accepted to begin the certification process to train other teachers in the START program. NW responds to employment needs with four summer classes

In an effort to respond to the recent trend in increasing unemployment, Northwest Mississippi Community College will offer four accelerated, non-credit training programs this summer on the Senatobia campus. The classes, to be taught by Northwest faculty in the Career-Technical Division, include Welding, Commercial Truck Driving, CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) and Industrial Maintenance. Full story


Northwest students receive scholarships

Students in Northwest Mississippi Community College's Student Support  Services (SSS) program received a cash scholarship for showing overall excellence and involvement in the program this year. These students maintained a 2.0 GPA and attended cultural outings and workshops and participated in the tutoring program offered to them. Full story

Les Fauves Art Sale set May 1

United States Congressman Travis Childers will be the keynote speaker at the 93rd graduation exercises held at Northwest Mississippi Community College on Friday, May 15. Full story


Announcement of Kelly W. Hudson Endowed Scholarship

The Kelly Wayne Hudson Endowed Scholarship has been established through the Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation, according to Sybil Canon, director of Development. Full story


NW rodeo athletes place in Ozark Region event

After getting past the first day of threatening tornadoes, rain and mud, Northwest Rodeo Coach Lawrence "Bud" Young reports a successful three-day NIRA event at the college farm April 2-4.
"It was a challenge that first day—moving kids and livestock around due to the weather, but we got past it." Full story

Outstanding students named at Northwest

Faculty members at Northwest Mississippi Community College have named the college’s 2008-2009 Outstanding Students, according to college officials. One outstanding student is chosen by faculty for each major within a department. Full story

Final Reading Roundtable session scheduled

This year’s final meeting of Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Reading Roundtable will be held on Tuesday, April 28 at 2 p.m. in the R.C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia campus. Northwest Psychology Instructor Mary Lynn McLaughlin will present “A Whole New Mind” by Daniel Pink. Full story


Northwest to present “Tartuffe: Born Again”

A modern adaptation of Molière’s classic play, “Tartuffe” is next on the agenda for the Northwest Mississippi Community College Theatre Department. Northwest student Jamison White of Horn Lake is directing “Tartuffe: Born Again,”  April 16-19 at the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus. Full story


Northwest receives $10,000 check for 2 + 2 Scholarship
BankPlus Banking Center President Worth Steen presented a check for $10,000 to NWCC and University of Mississippi for the 2+2 scholarship program. Full story


Northwest heating and air instructors attend annual workshop in Washington

Northwest Mississippi Community College Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Instructors Whit Perry and Josh Buchanan attended the 2009 HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) and Plumbing Instructor Workshop on March 11-13. The annual workshop was held at the National Conference Center in Landsdowne, Va. Full story


Cheerleading tryouts scheduled for Northwest

Tryouts for the Northwest Mississippi Community College Cheerleading Squad will be held on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18 at Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus, according to Pam Wooten, cheerleader sponsor. The deadline to apply is Monday, April 13. Full story
