Northwest will induct six new members into the Sports Hall of Fame on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Haraway Conference Center on the Senatobia campus.
New University of Mississippi Head Coach Houston Nutt will be the featured speaker. Nutt, who was named the 36th head coach of the Ole Miss program in December, has an overall coaching record of 111-70. He was head coach at the University of Arkansas from 1998-2007.
The inductees are Russell Evans of Memphis, Bryant Mix of Water Valley, LaConger (Cohran) Shelton of Germany, Marcus Hicks of Ridgeland, Bill Selby of Southaven, and Bryce McCollough, who will be honored posthumously.
Evans led Northwest to back-to-back state and region championships in 1991 and 1992. Evans, who helped the Rangers claim the NJCAA National Championship in 1992, was named NJCAA Player of the Year and Region XXIII Most Valuable Player. He finished his Northwest career by throwing for 5,897 passing yards and 56 touchdowns.
Mix, teammate of Evans, led the defense as defensive lineman. He was first team All-State and All-Region XXIII in 1991 and 1992 and was selected Honorable Mention All-American in 1992. Mix went on to be successful at Alcorn State University and played professionally with the Houston Oilers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
(Cohran) Shelton is the second woman to be placed in the Northwest Sports Hall of Fame. She played basketball with the Lady Rangers in 1981-1983. She helped the Lady Rangers win their first National Championship in 1983 and tied with Deborah Benson for top scoring with 424 points. She was named MVP in both the state and national tournaments.
A Ranger basketball player in 1997-99, Hicks played basketball for Northwest from 1996 through 1998. He had 1,108 career points at Northwest and averaged 14.2 points as a freshman and 19.1 points as a sophomore. He also collected 624 rebounds in 66 games. He helped the Rangers place fourth in the NJCAA National Tournament in 1998. Hicks continued to be successful as he led Ole Miss to the Sweet Sixteen in 2000-01.
Selby, current assistant baseball coach, played for Sports Hall of Famers Jim Miles and Donny Castle in 1990. As a player, he was named team MVP and set a school record in home runs. Selby went on to play professionally for minor and major league baseball teams including the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Campeche Pirates, Memphis Redbirds, and Iowa Cubs. Selby was inducted into the Buffalo Bisons Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
McCollough, who died in 2002, attended Northwest in 1959-61. He was a running back for the Rangers. In his time as a Ranger he was named “Most Outstanding Running back,” “Most Athletic,” and “Most Outstanding Offense Player.” Also popular in campus life, he was named one of Northwest’s “Preferred Men” and “Most Popular.”
