Bull-A-Rama set for Sept. 15
by Nancy Patterson
9/5/2007

If you think facing these 250-pound linemen is a chore, you should check out the athletic ability of the cowboys who will be participating in the Ross Motor Company Bull-A-Rama Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Northwest Multipurpose Livestock Arena. These athletes will climb aboard 2,000-pound bulls hoping for a successful ride and a shot at the prize money.

This 40-head championship bull riding competition has gotten to be a fall tradition for the college. Proceeds go to help the men’s and women’s rodeo team with travel expenses in the eight-state Ozark Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, according to Coach Lawrence “Bud” Young.

Competing in this event will be professional cowboys, amateurs and student athletes. Northwest students who will try to beat the eight-second whistle are Bud Whitehead of Flora, Brad Romedy of Olive Branch, Matt Gray of Monticello, Ark., Ross Burney of Coffeeville, Ryan Parker of St. Cloud, Fla., and Nail Whaley of Potts Camp.

Announcers for the event will be Bill Hankins of Calhoun City and Randy Mayer of Potts Camp. Looking out for the safety of the cowboys are bullfighters Bubba Freely and Caleb Lucius of Vardaman.

Admission is $10 at the gate, $8 in advance at the Tate County Co-Op, and children under six are admitted free. Other chute sponsors are Memphis Beauty Supply, Professional Services of Potts Camp and John Deere Ag Tech.

The performance begins at 8 p.m., but spectators are urged to arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow time for parking. For more information on Bull-A-Rama, contact Young at (662) 562-3430.

Cast members have been named for Northwest Mississippi Community College’s upcoming production of “Medea,” according to director and speech/theatre instructor S.A. Weakley. The play will be performed at the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus Oct. 25-28. Two special matinees for high schools are also available on Oct. 24, Weakley said.

Cast members are Sarah Pierce of Southaven as Medea; Kyle Foley of Sarah as Jason; Jamison White of Horn Lake as Aegeus; Brandi Bates of Coldwater as Nurse; Jim Anderson of Hernando, as Creon; Jonathan Lee of Southaven as Tutor and Nathan Algee of Coldwater as Slave.

The Women of Corinth are Megan Clayton of Holly Springs, Alyssa McElfresh of Senatobia, Janae Ashante Hunt of Michigan City and Jessica Cannon of Hernando. The Soldiers are Andrew Perry of Nesbit and Joseph Miner of Horn Lake.

Brynden Foster of Senatobia appears as Medea and Jason’s son. Weakley stated that there was one more part open for a boy, aged six or seven.

Weakley encouraged high schools to reserve either the 8:30 a.m. or noon matinee times to bring their high school drama students. The admission for students to come to the high school matinees is $2, he said.

“Medea” is a tragedy written by Euripides, based on the myth of Jason and Medea and first produced in 431 BC. The play tells the story of the jealousy and revenge of a woman betrayed by her husband.
