The Northwest Mississippi Community College Players will present Open Mic Night to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus.

Participation in the event is open to community members as well as students. All funds raised will be donated to a charity assisting residents of the Gulf Coast affected by the hurricane.

“We really hope the people of the community will be involved and support the victims of Hurricane Katrina—though we weren’t directly affected, we have families and friends who were,” said Krisanie Carpenter of Senatobia, president of the Northwest Players. “We want to help them rebuild their lives.”

Carpenter, a sophomore speech and theatre major, will join Northwest Players Vice President Fred Knichel of Olive Branch in hosting the evening, which will feature poetry, skits, bands, singing, and other performances. “Open Mic Night is to be a night of open self- expression,” said Carpenter. The Northwest Players will also give two special performances during the night.

Admission is $5 to the general public, and free to area Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Performance fees are $10 per person and $15 per group of two to six people.

The Northwest Players is a campus organization through which individuals strive to generate interest in theatre in the Northwest area. Membership is open to Northwest students interested in theatre.
