Dr. Gary L. Spears (left), president of Northwest Mississippi Community College, met with U.S. Congressman Roger Wicker recently in Washington.
Dr. Spears provided Wicker, who is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, and other members of the Mississippi Congressional delegation with an update on the college. He also discussed future funding for the addition of new allied health programs to Northwest’s curriculum. Spears has initiated a $17 million /Building on Tradition/ program which is fully funded, but is looking beyond Phase I to the second phase.
Included in that phase is a new Allied Health facility. “We recognize the interest of our students and the needs of the medical community to introduce new programs such as Dental Hygiene, Radiological Technology and Medical Laboratory Technolgy," said Dr. Spears. "To build this facility and to establish these programs will require several funding sources.” After meeting with the Congressional delegation, Spears was “encouraged by their interest and support.” (Photo by Sybil Canon)

Mountaineer's adventures focus of November Reading Roundtable
by LaJuan Tallo
11/2/2007
The focus of this month's Reading Roundtable at Northwest Mississippi Community College will be the book "Three Cups of Tea: one man's mission to promote peace...one school at a time" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.
The book discusses the mountaineer, Greg Mortenson, and his impact on an impoverished village in Pakistan. After a failed attempt to scale one of the world's highest mountain peaks and being nursed back to health by villagers, he promises to return and build a school for the children.
Over the next ten years Mortenson builds not just one, but 55 schools, especially for girls, in the forbidden terrain that gave birth to the Taliban.
The session will be led by Margaret Rogers, director of Learning Resources at Northwest.
Reading Roundtable will be held at 2 p.m. on Tues., Nov. 27 in the R. C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia campus. There will be no Reading Roundtable in December, and the program will resume in January.
The purpose of the program is to provide a forum for senior adults to read and discuss a variety of books during the course of each semester.
Discussions will be led by library faculty at Northwest.
For more information, contact the Northwest library at (662) 562-3268 or e-mail mrogers@northwestms.edu.
