London Silas Shavers, an adjunct woodwind instructor at Northwest Mississippi Community College, will perform with the Rhodes College Singers at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Friday, Nov. 24.

Shavers began teaching at Northwest in August. He teaches Music Appreciation and Applied Woodwinds.

“London Shavers has already made a difference in our Music Department,' said Dr. Ken Sipley, director of the Division of Fine Arts.  "He has proved his worth as a woodwind specialist, quickly gathering a following among our woodwind players.  In addition, he is a fine singer.  He is that unusual combination—adept in both vocal and instrumental music.  We’re fortunate to have him as part of our faculty.”

Shavers, a native of Chicago, has taught Clarinet at Rhodes College since 2004. He also teaches part time at Southwest Tennessee Community College. He is the branch manager at the Jessie J. Edwards Library in Coldwater and has worked with several churches in the area, teaching clarinet and singing in their music ministries.

He received his Bachelor’s in Music Education from Valparaiso University, and his Master’s of Music in Clarinet Performance, with a minor concentration in Music Theory. Currently, he is studying for his doctorate in Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance with a minor concentration in Wind Conducting at the University of Memphis.

Shavers has many years’ experience in woodwind performance, conducting, and vocal performance and is the recipient of numerous awards and achievements. He is a member of the International Clarinet Association; the West Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association; the West Tennessee Vocal Music Educators Association; The Greater Memphis Arts Council; the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and several other professional organizations.
