Northwest Mississippi Community College's commencement will be a special one this year for siblings Angela, Allison, and Andrew Mauney of Southaven since they will be graduating together with honors.
Although Andrew is a year younger than the twins, he went to summer school to catch up with Angela and Allison so they would all be able to graduate from high school together.
In 2006, the Mauneys graduated from Walnut High School. Allison graduated as the Valedictorian, Angela the Salutatorian, and Andrew eighth in his class, out of 50. They are all three members of Phi Theta Kappa, a national community college honor society.
They are each following in their mother’s footsteps by becoming teachers.
Their mother teaches Home Economics at Hernando High School, but will be transferring to Horn Lake High School this next year to teach Child Care Development.
Allison and Angela are majoring in elementary education, while Andrew is majoring in secondary education. Allison and Andrew were both named outstanding students in their area of study.
“They are very disciplined, hard-working, model students,” said DeSoto Center faculty member Khalid Khouri. “They even sometimes stay late after class to make sure they are finished with their work. I have greatly enjoyed getting to know them.”
Northwest will hold commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 16 at 10 a.m. and at 3 p.m. Those receiving Associate of Applied Science degrees and Career Certificates will graduate at 10 a.m., and students receiving Associate of Arts degrees will graduate at 3 p.m. Mississippi Supreme Court Associate Justice Ann Hannaford Lamar will address both groups of graduates.
Students in the Northwest Mississippi Community College Environmental Sciences Organization (ESO) on the Senatobia campus take their commitment to the environment seriously - they are working together with volunteers and the Northwest Senatobia Faculty Association in the Adopt-A Highway program and in local projects to clean up their environment.
