Representatives from Toyota came to Northwest Mississippi Community College on May 17 as part of a visit with the four community colleges in the northern part of Mississippi. These colleges, Northwest, Northeast, East Mississippi and Itawamba will be involved in workforce training for the Toyota labor force in Tupelo, according to David Bledsoe, Northwest director of Workforce Development/WIA and Community Services. "Toyota is already very familiar with Northwest because of our great tool and die technology program," Bledsoe said. In the last five years, Northwest has had two students

Northwest offers family fun on an "Atlanta Adventure"

Looking for an overnight excursion full of family fun? Leave the driving to us!

The Division of Continuing Education at Northwest Mississippi Community College is offering a Kid’s Kollege “Atlanta Adventure” trip July 21-22 that includes an Atlanta Braves game and a trip to the Georgia Aquarium.

The deadline to register for this trip is June 14.

The group will leave the Senatobia campus on Saturday at 7 a.m. and travel by chartered bus to Atlanta. That evening, participants will go to Turner Field to watch the Atlanta Braves battle the St. Louis Cardinals.

Sunday morning, the group will visit the Georgia Aquarium. The aquarium is the world’s largest with more than eight million gallons of water and more than 100,000 animals with 500 different species.

The fee is $150, which includes transportation, room, admission fees to the game and aquarium, and breakfast on Sunday. Additional money will be needed for lunch and dinner both days. The trip is tailored for grades 1-6, and families are encouraged to register. The instructors are Bud Donahu and Robin Robison.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour addressed 319 Career and Technical graduates at Northwest Mississippi Community College May 18 in Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus. "Northwest is a great institution," he told the graduates and their families. "Generations of great leaders have come from this community college."

In his address Barbour encouraged graduates to stay and work in Mississippi. "Just like people saw New York in a different light after 9-11, the world has seen Mississippi in a new light after Hurricane Katrina." He cited examples of Mississippi's progress including the recent announcement of the new Toyota facility in the Tupelo area. (Photo by Julie Bauer)


Southaven Mayor Greg Davis delivered the commencement address to 227 Associate of Arts graduates at Northwest Mississippi Community College May 18 in Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus. Davis, who has seen unprecedented growth in his city, has placed a priority not only on economics, but also on quality of life for city residents. He was instrumental in the City of Southaven's recent establishment of a $100,000 endowment to the college's 2+2 Scholarship Initiative, which benefits both Northwest and University of Mississippi students attending DeSoto Center.

In his commencement address, Davis congratulated graduates for their achievements and hard work. "Now, more than ever, you should be setting new goals." His three-point formula for success included: "Believe in yourself, take pride in what you do, and never, ever quit."

Deadline to sign up for Northwest Band Camp May 25

There are still seats available at Northwest Mississippi Community College’s first annual Summer Band Camp, according to John Ungurait, director of bands for Northwest. The camp, which is scheduled for June 24 - 29, will be offered for grades 7-12. The deadline to register for the camp is May 25, according to Ungurait.

The camp’s purpose is to provide high quality instruction for one week in all areas related to school band programs. Classes in instrumental instruction, music theory and appreciation, marching, drum major, and color guard are scheduled. Students will be required to audition for placement and participation in one of the camp’s bands. Also, students will be required to register for a minimum of four classes. The week will conclude with final concerts from all of the camp bands. In addition, students will be required to participate in all of the camp’s recreational activities. Campers will be housed in the college’s dorms.

Area high school and junior high school band directors will be instructors for the camp. Camp counselors will be made up of college students under the direction of the camp director, staff and Northwest housing staff. The director of the camp is Jeff Cox, director of bands at Desoto Central High School.

The fee for the camp is $175. A non-refundable $50 deposit is required at registration, and the balance is due on or before the May 25 deadline. The camp fee includes tuition, room, meals , camp t-shirt and all camp activities.

RV care class offered at Northwest

Getting ready to take that summer RV trip? Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Division of Continuing Education is offering a seminar in Care and Maintenance of your Recreational Vehicle (RV) on Tuesday, June 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Haraway Center on the Senatobia campus.

The seminar, which is great for both the novice and the expert RVer, will be taught by Mark Coyne, service manager for Southaven RV. Coyne has been an avid RVer for over 30 years and a service director for 35 years. He has shared his enthusiasm for RVing as he has presented seminars in several states including Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Florida.

Some of the topics that will be covered include care and maintenance of your RV, setting up at the camp site, hints on planning trips, safety travel tips, and problems easily solved at the campground. Coyne will include a question and answer period at the end of the seminar.

The fee for the seminar is $25 per person, or $40 per couple.

"Kids in the Kitchen" trips offered through Northwest Kid's Kollege

This summer, kids who love to cook or want to learn can pursue their passion under the guidance of skilled instructors at the Viking Cooking School in Memphis. Northwest Mississippi Community College's Division of Continuing Education will offer two hands-on classes will teach age-appropriate cooking skills while developing life skills such as teamwork, applying math and science, and developing creativity through cooking.

On Wednesday, June 13, Viking will offer “Teens Classic Steakhouse” for ages 11-14. In this dinner party class, students will learn to make a classical French sauce, stuff potatoes vertically, cook filet mignon to perfection and flambe’ a dessert. They will enjoy some Sinatra while they enjoy their steak dinner. The deadline to register for this class is Monday, June 4.

A “Kids’ Pizza Party” for ages 7-12 will be held June 21. Even at a party, kids can learn valuable life lessons. Observing how yeast is activated and its rising action is a science experiment kids will never forget. Measuring, reading and math skills are all brought into play and kids won’t even realize they are learning as they get creative making, shaping and topping their own pizzas. The best part of the day is getting to eat their creation. The deadline to register for this class is Tuesday, June 12.

The fee for each class is $65. Transportation to the school is provided. Students will meet at Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus at 8:30 a.m. and return to Northwest at approximately 2:30 p.m. Students will not be allowed to carry cell phones into class.

Golf and Tennis camps offered through Northwest Kid's Kollege

Students in grades 4-8 who are interested in learning golf or tennis this summer can sign up for Kid’s Kollege at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

The camps will be held June 11-15. Golf Camp will be held from 8:30 to11:30 a.m. and Tennis Camp will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. that week.

Boys and girls attending Golf Camp will have fun learning the fundamental techniques of golf. They will also learn scoring and terms used in the game of golf. If possible, students should bring their own clubs.

Tennis Camp participants will be taught the fundamentals of the game, including rules and etiquette, grip, forehand, backhand, and serves. Students should bring their own rackets, if possible. Some rackets will be available upon request.

The instructor for the camps is Cameron Blount, intramural sports and recreation manager at Northwest. The fee for each camp is $75.

Northwest to hold two commencement ceremonies

Two dignitaries will deliver commencement addresses when Northwest Mississippi Community College holds its 91st graduation May 18 in Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus. A total of 553 students will participate, according to Northwest Registrar Larry Simpson.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour will address 319 Career and Technical graduates at the 10 a.m. ceremony. These students will receive Associate of Applied Science degrees and career certificates.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis will deliver the commencement message for 234 students at the 3 p.m. ceremony. This number includes those receiving Associate of Arts degrees and Associate Degree nursing students.

Graduates and their families will be welcomed by Northwest President, Dr. Gary Lee Spears, at both ceremonies. Northwest cosmetology major Laura McDonald of Olive Branch will deliver the invocation at the morning ceremony, and Katherine Newsom of Rolling Fork will deliver the afternoon invocation.

The Northwest Symphonic Band, under the direction of John Ungurait, will perform "Pomp and Circumstance" for both ceremonies. The Symphonic Band will also play the Alma Mater, which will be led by Susanne VanDyke.

The Northwest Singers will perform Carmen Dragon's arrangement of "America the Beautiful."

Dr. Spears will award diplomas and certificates, assisted at the morning ceremony by Joe Broadway, executive assistant to the President and district dean of Career Technical Education. He will be assisted at the 3 p.m. ceremony by Academic Dean, Dr. Marilyn Bateman. Nurses will receive pins from Director of the Division of Nursing Vicki Hale. Simpson will announce the graduates.

The cafeteria in the Haraway Center, located across the street from Howard Coliseum, will be open during the day for the convenience of graduates and their families.
