A variety of non-credit classes for summer will be offered by Northwest Mississippi Community College and The University of Mississippi at the DeSoto Center.
Golf for Beginners will help students learn the basics of golf, including beginning swing with irons and some woods, grip, stance and putting. The $75 fee includes range balls and five lessons. Students should bring their own clubs. The class will meet from 6-7 p.m. on June 6,7,8,14 and 15 at the Cherokee Valley Golf Club. Ever wanted to learn to sign? American Sign Language is designed to improve the channels of communication between the deaf/hard of hearing and the hearing community both in the community and in the educational setting. Educators, parents, students, medical and law enforcement personnel and local businesses are encouraged to attend. The class will be held from 3-5 p.m. on June 5, 12, 19 and 26. The fee is $60, and the class will be taught by Vera Edwards.
Beginning Floral Design will cover foundation containers and basic principles for floral design. Instructor David Strong will provide all materials. Students will learn how to make several arrangements using a variety of containers to fit different occasions. Students will need to bring a knife, scissors, wire cutters and hand pruning scissors. The class will meet June 13 and 15 from 6-8 p.m. The fee is $75.
Advanced Floral Design, which will also be taught by David Strong, will be offered June 20 and 22 from 6-8 p.m. In this course, students will study and create different styles of line design which can be adapted to centerpieces. Students need to bring a knife and pruning scissors to class on the first day. The fee for the class is $75.
Oil and Acrylic Painting is a beginner course which will focus on the use of brushes, canvases and other materials needed for painting. Composition, perspective, subject matter, and correct paint application are among the topics covered in the class. Each student will complete two paintings. A supply list will be provided on the first day of class. Classes will be held on June 14, 21, 28 and July 12, 19 and 26 from 5:30-8 p.m. The class will be held at the DeSoto Art Academy. Need to improve your computer literacy? There are several classes to help students learn more about computer programs offered this summer.
Introduction to Computers is a beginning hands-course designed for adults who have never used a personal computer, or who have limited knowledge of computers. The class, which is taught by Doris Stepp, will be held at the DeSoto Center on June 6,8, and 13 from 4-6 p.m. The fee is $60.
Beginning Excel, taught by Debra Batton, will be offered June 12, 14 and 19 from 6-8 p.m. The hands-on course will cover using spreadsheets, entering simple formulas and creating graphs. The prerequisite for the class is basic computer skills. The fee is $60.
Introduction to Windows XP will help students gain a general understanding of Windows XP. Students will work with windows, files and folders. Students will also learn how to use the taskbar, desktop and help functions, and learn how to locate, open and operate various programs on the computer. The prerequisite for the class is basic computer skills. The fee is $60. The course, which will meet June 15, 20 and 22 from 6-8 p.m., will be taught by Doris Stepp.
Beginning Word is designed to introduce students to basic word processing features by learning to create documents, utilize proofing tools, format pages and edit documents. The prerequisite for the class is basic computer skills. The fee is $60. The class, which meets June 20 and 22 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., will be taught by Kelli Charnes.
