Scholarship deadline April 1
03/12/04

Students who are interested in scholarships to attend Northwest Mississippi Community College are reminded of the April 1 application deadline.

Applications (including all required attachments) for Presidential, Leadership, June S. Gardner and Foundation scholarships for the 2004-05 school year must be received by April 1.

Presidential, Leadership, and June S. Gardner scholarships are available for in-state fall-entering freshmen only and are awarded in the amount of one-fourth per semester for four semesters. Awards do not cover the cost of books.

Presidential Scholarships are limited to in-state students, and awards are based on ACT composite scores. Up to $425 toward tuition per semester for two years is awarded for a composite score of 20 to 24; up to $1,250 toward tuition, room, board, and fees per semester for two years is awarded for a composite of 25 to 28; and up to $1,550 for the same expense is awarded for ACT scores of 29 or above.

Leadership Scholarships in the amount of $325 toward tuition per semester for two years are awarded to selected in-district students with an ACT composite score of 15 to 19 and a B average in high school. The student must also have special skills, talents, or leadership abilities, and at least one recommendation from an educator is required.

June S. Gardner Scholarships are awarded to in-district high school valedictorians and salutatorians for up to $1,250 toward tuition, room, board and fees per semester for two years. This scholarship cannot be combined with any other academic scholarship, and students should make application with their high school counselor.

Application forms are available in high school guidance counselors' offices as well as in the Northwest Recruiting Office on the Senatobia campus. To have a form mailed, one may call (662) 562-3222.

Approximately 150 scholarships will be awarded by the Northwest Foundation. "These scholarships are not based entirely on grades but rather on need. The aim is to help middle income families whose income levels prohibit their receiving government-based aid programs, such as the Pell Grant," said Sybil Canon, director of Development.

In addition, Foundation scholarships are awarded to non-traditional students (over the age of 21).

Except for the Pettey Respiratory Therapy Scholarship and the John Deere Corporation Scholarship, which may be awarded to out-of-state students, all other Foundation scholarships must be awarded to Mississippi residents.

Students must apply using the Northwest Foundation Scholarship Application. For in-district students, these are available in high school counselors' offices. Students may request a form by calling (662) 560-1105, or forms may be downloaded online at the college's Web site, www.northwestms.edu. Two letters of recommendation must accompany the Foundation scholarship application.

Each scholarship applicant must have on file in the Registrar's Office the following: application for admission, ACT score report, Northwest Financial Aid Information Form, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and a complete high school transcript (after graduation). Academic and Foundation scholarships may be altered by the amount of federal aid awarded.
