Bellsouth grant
03/12/04
Northwest Mississippi Community College is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from BellSouth, announced Dr. David M. Haraway, Northwest president.
This is the second grant provided by BellSouth, which is used to fund three $500 scholarships for as long as there are funds available to do so.
The $5,000 grant to Northwest is part of a strategic BellSouth initiative to establish scholarship endowment funds for higher education in communities statewide. BellSouth will award a total of $75,000 in Mississippi - $5,000 to each of the 15 community colleges in the state.

"This initiative helps to ensure we continue to have opportunities to recruit and employ people with the workforce training skills and education our industry demands," said Marley Aarons, BellSouth regional manager.
This year's $75,000 endowment to community colleges across Mississippi builds on the $150,000 the company contributed last year. Each community college oversees the administration and award process for its BellSouth endowment.
"BellSouth is making a significant impact in the lives of Mississippi's students by contributing a total of $225,000 to the 15 community colleges in Mississippi in only two years," said Sybil R. Canon, Northwest director of Development. "The Northwest Foundation is honored to be included in BellSouth's effort to make a college education available to the citizens of Mississippi."
These grants are awarded to build on the mission of the State Board of Community and Junior Colleges, which is to "... enhance a community and junior college education and workforce training for Mississippians, promote positive leadership and create partnerships with business, industry and other entities...."
