Northwest reminds prospective students of scholarship deadline

Students who are interested in scholarships to attend Northwest Mississippi Community College are reminded of the April 1 application deadline. Applications for Leadership, Presidential, and Foundation scholarships for the 2006-07 school year are due April 1.

Leadership and Presidential scholarships are available for fall-entering freshmen only and are awarded in the amount of one-fourth per semester for four semesters.

Leadership Scholarships in the amount of $425 toward tuition per semester for two years are awarded to selected in-district students with an ACT composite score of 15 to 19 and a B average in high school. The student must also have special skills, talents, or leadership abilities, and at least one recommendation for an educator is required.

Foundation Scholarships are available to any Mississippi student who meets the criteria for full-time admission to Northwest. A separate application is required, along with two letters of recommendation. The amounts and criteria for individual scholarships vary. An estimated $180,000 in scholarship funds is expected to be awarded through the Northwest Foundation, according to Sybil Canon, director of Development. "These scholarships are not based entirely on grades but rather on need. The aim is to help middle income families whose income levels prohibit their receiving government-based aid programs," said Canon.
