Students SOAR at Northwest
by LaJuan Tallo
6/1/2007

Northwest Mississippi Community College is once again offering new students a chance to avoid the traditional long lines of registration through its Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) program this summer.

New students who have completed their application for the 2007-2008 school year can take advantage of the program all during the summer, according to Matthew Domas, director of campus life and housing on the Senatobia campus. “SOAR allows students to attend orientation, advising and registration with a smaller group of students at times that are most convenient to them,” Domas said.

The SOAR program is made up of two parts, according to Domas.

There is the “early bird” pre-registration program, which will take place on the Senatobia and DeSoto Center campuses every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in June, and July 10-12. There will be two sessions a day at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the Senatobia campus, and one session per day at 1 p.m. at the DeSoto Center. Due to limited availability at the DeSoto Center, only certain majors can be advised at this time, Domas said.

Students are required to make an appointment for these sessions.

During the orientation sessions, students will be able to learn about the college’s policies, and what to expect in a college environment. Students will meet one on one with a faculty adviser during the advising and registration portion. The adviser will help students choose classes and get them registered for the fall semester. Students will also be able to pay their bill, check on their housing assignments and financial aid, visit the bookstore, and take their student photo ID during this summer session.

The second part of SOAR is the regular pre-registration/orientation program July 17-19, which will be held on all campuses and is available to students accepted for admission but who are not able to attend the early bird sessions. These students will receive an invitation in the mail later this summer which will provide them with more information and assign them to these sessions on those dates alphabetically.

For more information or to make a reservation for the early bird pre-registration program on the Senatobia campus, call Jennifer Stroupe at 662-562-3909. To make a reservation for the DeSoto Center campus, call 662-280-6172.
