Want to learn to blog? Create a pottery masterpiece? How about decorating cakes your family and friends will marvel at? Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Division of Continuing Education has something for everyone this January on the Senatobia campus.

Kim Steinman’s popular “Cake Decorating” will be offered again this spring on Mondays Jan. 28 - March 3 from 6-8 p.m. in Yalobusha Hall, Room 120. Come join the fun and learn to create beautifully-decorated cakes for any occasion. Students will lean the magic of icing to create roses, borders, flowers, and other cake embellishments. Icing recipe and a sully list will be given at first class meeting. The cost of the class is $60 plus supplies.

Northwest’s newest art instructor Ashley Chavis will teach “Introduction to Pottery” on Tuesdays Jan. 29- May 13 from 6-8 p.m. in the Pottery Studio in the Art Building. This is an introductory clay course where no previous experience working with clay is required. This course provides instruction for basic throwing techniques on the potter’s wheel. Students will complete a series of projects including cups, mugs and bowls in order to develop their full understanding of how basic pottery shapes are produced. Students will also learn how to embellish their work through a series of treatment techniques leading up to glazing the finishes forms. The fee for the class is $290, and includes supplies, firing and glazing.

Northwest public service and reference librarian Maggie Moran will teach a new course this spring called “Designing and Constructing a Blog Using Blogger.” The class will be offered on Thursdays Jan.31- Feb. 28 from 6 -7:30 p.m. in the Tunica Building, Room 136.

According to Moran, blogging has revolutionized the Internet, and there are now more blogs than Web sites. During the last election, blogs surpassed the media in candidate coverage. This five-week course is designed to teach the basics of blogging and RSS feeds. Students who take this course will design, construct and maintain their own themed blog, and visit social networking sites such as Flickr, LibraryThing, 43 Things and You Tube. The fee for the class is $35.

Looking for more curb appeal for your home? Join landscape artist Joanna Patton owner of the Garden District, for “Landscaping 101 for the Homeowner.” The class will be offered on Thursdays, Jan. 31 - March 6 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Students will be encouraged to bring a photo of the particular area they would like to redo. They will learn how to draw a site plan, plan their work and work their plan. They will also learn plant materials, pest control, site preparation, landscape design and irrigation basics. The class will take field trips on campus and visit local garden centers. At the end of the class, students will be ready to enhance home and garden with a plan they feel comfortable installing themselves. The fee for the class is $50.
