Northwest Mississippi Community College Director of Development Sybil Canon was smiling when the Foundation books for 2006 were closed. The Foundation experienced a 58 percent increase in cash contributions, along with receiving an airplane engine from FedEx for Aviation Maintenance students worth an estimated $1 million.
For the period just ended, the Foundation collected $825,540.42 compared with $522,000 in 2005.
For Canon, those dollars translated into smiles on the faces of Northwest students who received scholarships. For that same period, the Foundation awarded 287 scholarships, representing $187,000.
“We are extremely pleased with the increase in contributions to our Foundation this past year," said Northwest President, Dr. Gary Lee Spears. "This gives the college more opportunities to expand our scholarship offerings to worthy students.”
One of those students, sophomore nursing student LaRenda Cribbs of Hernando, was so grateful for her assistance from the Foundation that she named her child for Mrs. Canon.
“I started nursing school in August of 2005,” said Cribbs, who is a cancer survivor. “I was so inspired by my nurses, I decided that if I went back to college, it would be to become a nurse.”
Cribbs says she had not met Canon until she applied for assistance from the Northwest Foundation. “I was working at Kroger, had a child in day care, and it was absolutely necessary that we have financial help. I couldn’t have afforded to attend college without this extra help.”
She was awarded the Joey Boldreghini Endowed Scholarship. Not only was Cribbs a working mother, she was also expecting her second child. “I only missed five days of classes,” she said. “I had to double up on my clinicals.”
Her baby, named Cannon, was born on Valentine’s Day in 2006. Cribbs is just one of the Foundation’s success stories. New goals are already being set.

“We are overwhelmed by the dramatic increase in giving, and I must give credit to Dr. Spears, Northwest’s president, for his personal involvement in the Foundation and to the Board of Directors. This board is one of the most committed non-profit boards I have worked with in my 30 years of fundraising.”
Foundation President Mike Herrington of Olive Branch agrees. “Several years ago, the Board of Directors held a special meeting to set goals for the Foundation, and we decided on the primary goal of increasing the endowment to $4 million by the end of 2007. It is exciting to know that as of the end of 2006, our endowment is valued at $4.2 million, which, of course, means more scholarships to Northwest students.”
Canon predicts that in 2007, an estimated 300 scholarships will be awarded representing more than $200,000. Those funds have come from different sources, according to Dolores Wooten, manager of Alumni Affairs and Development Operations. “Fundraising events such as our golf tournaments, bridge tournaments and the intercollegiate rodeo all play a part in not only raising funds, but also increasing awareness of what we are trying to do to help students. We really do appreciate all of the businesses who sponsor these events and all those who participate.”
One Northwest supporter who can usually be found at any fundraising event is Dr. Robert Smith of Hernando. Dr. Smith serves as vice president of the Foundation Board of Directors and was the Alumni Association president for 10 years. “As an alumnus of Northwest, I know personally the benefits of attending this college. It is encouraging to see the support from alumni, from local citizens and from industry to provide educational opportunities for our friends and neighbors right here in northwest Mississippi.”
When Cribbs graduates from Northwest in May, she can’t wait to start her career in nursing. “As soon as I can after I start to work, I plan to establish an endowment myself here at Northwest.”
