Non-credit classes for the spring semester at Northwest Mississippi Community College's Senatobia campus include a variety of topics from wild turkey hunting to beginning Latin and from children's choir to piano classes.
The Singing Stars, the children's choir, directed by Mary Sipley, begins Jan. 11 and will run through April 26. Sessions are held on Tuesdays from 5 to 6:15 p.m., in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. Children interested in developing singing and performance skills are invited to audition. Members must be in grades 4-8, and boys' voices must be unchanged. Auditions for new members will be Jan. 11 at 4:30 p.m. Practice for new and returning members begins at 5 p.m. Jan. 11. The cost of the class is $50, which includes the music fee.
Beginning Latin, also to be taught by Brown, will be held on Tuesdays, Jan. 18-Feb. 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Humanities Building. This class will let students take a look at Latin and how it has influenced our English vocabulary. Students will be translating Latin sentences into English in the first lesson. The registration deadline for this class is Jan. 10, and the fee is $50 plus a $15 book fee.
Do you ever feel lachrymose? Learn more about words and word history in the Beginning Etymology class which emphasizes vocabulary through a variety of activities. Linda Brown is the instructor for classes set for Thursdays, Jan. 20-Feb. 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Humanities Building. The fee is $50.
Cake Decorating, to be taught by Kim Steinman, will be held on Mondays, Jan. 24-Feb. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the McLendon Center Board Dining Room. This beginning class will teach participants the basics of cake decorating including making icing, selecting a recipe, and making flower designs. Due to limited enrollment, early registration is encouraged. The fee is $40 plus supplies.
Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People with instructor David Haynes will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25, from 6 to 9:30 p.m., in Room 110 of the Fine Arts Building. This short course is designed to give students enough secrets of the trade to make piano playing a part of their lives. The fee is $45 plus a book/CD fee of $25.
A new class for continuing education this spring is the Wild Turkey Hunting Workshop, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Coordinated by Jim Robbins, this workshop will feature seminars by wildlife biologists, foresters, food plot specialists, call makers and a panel of turkey hunting experts.
Dr. George Hurst, retired professor from Mississippi State University, will be the featured speaker. Dr. Hurst is currently researching predator influence in turkey populations and will present his findings in his lecture. Participants can bring their favorite calls or buy one at the event. Books on the topic will also be available. The registration deadline is Jan. 28. The fee for participants 16 years and up is $20, and $10 for those under 16 years of age.
