The Northwest Mississippi Community College Symphonic Winds will present “March Winds,” featuring London Silas Shavers on clarinet, on Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus.
The group is under the direction of John Ungurait, Northwest director of bands. According to Ungurait, Shavers will be featured on “Theme from Shindler’s List,” the theme from the Academy Award-winning movie. The theme by John Williams was originally recorded by the London Symphony with renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman performing the moving solo on violin. Shavers, Northwest woodwind instructor, will perform the solo on clarinet.
A native of Chicago, Shavers received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Valparaiso University, and his Master of Music in Clarinet Performance, with a minor concentration in Music Theory. Currently, he is studying for his doctorate in Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance with a minor concentration in Wind Conducting at the University of Memphis.
Shavers has many years’ experience in woodwind performance, conducting, and vocal performance and is the recipient of numerous awards and achievements. He is a member of the International Clarinet Association; the West Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association; the West Tennessee Vocal Music Educators Association; The Greater Memphis Arts Council; the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and several other professional organizations.
Other pieces scheduled to be performed at the concert include “The Klaxon,” a famous march by Henry Fillmore, Carl Strommen’s tribute to American service men and women, “American Heroes,” and Calvin Cluster’s “Variations on Scarborough Fair.”
The concert is free to the public. For more information, contact Ungurait at 662-562-3335, or e-mail jbungurait@northwestms.edu.
