Northwest Art Exhibition to feature work of Memphis artist

An upcoming art exhibition at Northwest Mississippi Community College will feature the work of Memphis artist Remy Miller. “Drawings” will run March 4-28 at the Northwest Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.
An opening will be held on Sunday, March 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. The public is invited to attend.
Miller has been a professor at the Memphis College of Art since 1987. He has taught art in Ohio and Minnesota, and had exhibitions in Missouri, Vermont, Kentucky, Colorado, California, Indiana, Tennessee, New York, Ohio and Illinois. He has published numerous articles in “Number,” an independent journal of the arts. He has served as Artist in Residence at the Macnamara Foundation in Westport Island, Maine in 2004, and at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughn, Ireland in 2001. The artist was the Tennessee editor of “New Art Examiner,” from 1989-1991.

Deadline to register for Graceland tour March 20

One of the things that makes Memphis unique is Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, the most celebrated entertainer in the world. Northwest Mississippi Community College Division of Continuing Education is offering Lifelong Learners a chance to visit this historic Memphis home on Friday, March 23.
Northwest Lifelong Learners can enjoy the Graceland Platinum Tour, which gives an inside look at the legendary star known as the King of Rock and Roll. The tour includes an auto-guided tour of the mansion and grounds, along with self-guided tours of Elvis’s two custom airplanes, automobile museum, the Sincerely Elvis Museum, and the exhibit, “Elvis After Dark.”
The fee for the tour, which includes transportation, is $35. The group will leave Northwest at 9 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. The tour will last approximately two to three hours, after which the group will return to Southaven for a late lunch. The deadline to register for the trip is Tuesday, March 20.

Learn to use Publisher 2003 at Northwest

In March, the Northwest Mississippi Community College Division of Continuing Education will offer a course in Publisher 2003. The class will be taught on Saturdays from March 3-31, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. in the Tunica Bldg, Room 130 on the Senatobia campus.
The course teaches the basic functions and features of Publisher 2003. Students will learn how to create a publication, adjust its page setup, enter and edit text, insert pictures and create and modify text frames. They will also learn to work with multi-page publications, objects, graphics and tables, and how to print publications.
Helen Williamson, IC3 certified instructor, will teach the class, which is worth 2.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).The fee for the course is $60, book included.

Officials from Northwest Mississippi Community College stopped by the DeSoto County Farm Bureau office in Hernando Feb. 7 to express appreciation to that group for the establishment of the Milton Walker Jones Jr. Endowment. The fund was established in 2003 with an initial gift of $6,000. Since that time, they have contributed an additional $18,700 from proceeds from their annual golf tournament. The Northwest Foundation has added $5,000 in matching funds. Jones, who died in 2001, was a farmer and served as state director of Mississippi Farm Bureau. He was president of the DeSoto Council for Economic Development. Reading Roundtable scheduled for Feb. 26 at Northwest

Clifton Taulbert’s award winning novel “Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored” will be the topic of discussion at the Feb. 26 Reading Roundtable at Northwest Mississippi Community College. The book is a moving and evocative story of a young man growing up in Glen Allen, Miss. The discussion will be led by Crystal Giles, Northwest Technical Services Librarian.
The February session of Reading Roundtable will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26. in the R. C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia campus.
The purpose of the program is to provide a forum for senior adults to read and discuss a variety of books during the course of each semester. Discussions are led by library faculty.

Popular culinary experience offered again by Northwest Continuing Education

Back by popular demand! Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Department of Continuing Education is offering another trip to the Viking Culinary Arts Center in Memphis again this month. The deadline to register for this exciting event is Wednesday, Feb. 21, and the trip is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 28.
Participants will feel as if they are in the kitchen of a five-star restaurant as they hone culinary skills, working side by side with one of the Viking chefs. They can learn by doing as they are guided through all the techniques needed to prepare a delicious class meal, which everyone will enjoy for lunch.
As a gift for attending the workshop, each participant will receive a 100 percent cotton Viking apron. Participants may shop in the Viking Store after class and will receive a 10 percent discount that day.
According to Patricia Lowder, coordinator of Continuing Education, class enrollment will be limited, so early registration is advised. There are no refunds offered after Feb. 21.
Participants will leave Northwest at 9 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. The cost of the class is $95 and transportation and lunch is included.

Basics of eBay Selling offered at Northwest

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Division of Continuing Education will offer two February classes in "Basics of eBay Selling" on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 21, 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., in the Yalobusha Building, Room 120 on the Senatobia campus.
Instructor Olen Batchelor, an eBay-trained Certified Education Specialist, will teach students how to make a supplemental or full-time income using eBay. The multimedia course will include eBay University's own training materials and will cover selling basics and beyond, including research, opening and using a Paypal account, improving listings with better descriptions and digital photography, security and post-sale activities such as billing and shipping.
The cost of the course is $50 plus the cost of the book, which is $18.

Northwest Rodeo topic of Feb. Lunch and Learn

Northwest Mississippi Community College Rodeo Coach Bud Young will answer the question “Northwest Rodeo-- what’s it all about?” at the Feb. 14 session of Northwest’s Lunch and Learn.
Participants are asked to arrive at the Haraway Center between 11:15 and 11:30 a.m. for lunch, which is a la carte. Following lunch, the presentation will begin. It is expected to last about an hour.
Lunch and Learn is designed to give adults 50 and older an opportunity to interact with faculty members and administrators in a relaxed atmosphere apart from the traditional classroom or office.
