Fiber exhibit to open March 5

An upcoming exhibit at Northwest Mississippi Community College will feature the work of fiber artists from Mississippi and Memphis. "As Time Passes By" will run March 5-27 at the Northwest Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus. The works are inspired by any given month of the year.

An opening will be held on Sunday, March 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

The exhibit will feature works from the North Mississippi Fiber Guild, the Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild, and the Memphis Guild of Handloom Weavers. Pieces featuring weaving, knitting, sewing, handspun yarns, caning, pine needle weaving on gourds, surface dyed silks and tapestries will be on display.

Northwest students, faculty bring home seven Allie awards

Northwest students, faculty and their families attended the Northwest Mississippi Theatre Alliance “Allie” Awards Banquet sponsored by the DeSoto Arts Council Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center.

The awards ceremony honors the outstanding performances of those who have acted in community theater and high school theater in the past year. Northwest was nominated for 21 Allie Awards and received seven.

Northwest winners were: Chase Hairston of Olive Branch, Best Leading Actor in a Play, “Our Town”; Michael Rohrbacher of Horn Lake, Best Supporting Actor in a Play, “The Nerd”; Krisanie Carpenter of Senatobia, Best Supporting Actress in a Play, “The Nerd”; Nicole Sturgis of Pope, Best Sound, Our Town and Sam Weakley, for Best Lighting, “Our Town.” Weakley, a Speech and Theatre instructor at Northwest, was also awarded Best Director of a Comedy for “The Nerd” and Best Director of a Drama for “Our Town.”

Welty novel focus of March Reading Roundtable

The focus of Northwest Mississippi Community College's March Reading Roundtable will be The Optimist's Daughter by Mississippi author Eudora Welty. The discussion will be led by Northwest's newest librarian Maggie Moran. Reading Roundtable will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 27 in the R. C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia campus.

The Optimist's Daughter is one of many novels written by Welty. The book will take participants to a time and place where the characters may resemble people they know, and the discussion of the book may lead to new insights into the relationships among love and death and memory.

All participants must fill out a registration form. Those who wish to receive a copy of the book being discussed should attach a payment of $5 to their registration form. If participants already own a copy of the book, or wish to get it from another source, they will still need to register for the session.

Register for Photo Preservation Class by February 20

The University of Mississippi and Northwest Mississippi Community College at DeSoto Center will offer a non-credit continuing education class in Photo Preservation II: Creating a Memory Album. Registration deadline for the class is Feb. 20. The class will meet at the DeSoto Center on March 4, 11 and 25 from 9 a.m.-noon. Northwest DeSoto celebrates National Cardiovascular Professionals Week

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Cardiovascular Technology program at DeSoto Center and the Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals (ACVP) announce their annual celebration of Cardiovascular Professionals Week, Feb. 12-18.

The week is in celebration of the work performed by cardiovascular professionals, practitioners, and managers and the contributions these individuals make to healthcare. Cardiovascular services practitioners include those professionals working in invasive, non-invasive, Echo, EKG and cardiopulmonary departments.

The celebration is a nationally recognized week, which can be found on the official federal legislative calendar for important dates and recognitions. ACVP and is more than 3,200 members celebrate the week through a variety of activities. "One of the most visible ways to support the work these professionals perform is to display posters and heart models, as well as interactive activities that are currently being displayed at the CVP booth now located in the third floor atrium at DeSoto Center," said Brian G.Williamson, Northwest Cardiovascular program director. "We encourage all who might be interested in learning more about the Northwest Cardiovascular Technology program, which is the only program of its kind in the states of Mississippi, Arkansas , and Tennessee, and one of only 25 in the entire nation," he added.

The theme for this year's celebration is "Cardiovascular Professionals: The Heart of Success!" This theme emphasizes the professional and care which individuals in this allied health profession exhibit.

Northwest offers Basics of eBay Selling

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Continuing Education Division is offering Basics of eBay Selling on Saturday, March 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m; and on Tuesday, April 4 from 6 -10 p.m. on the main campus in Senatobia.

This class is for students who want to learn to make a supplemental or full-time income using this popular on-line tool. Instructor Olen Batchelor, an eBay Certified Education Specialist, will use eBay University's own training materials to cover selling basics and beyond, including research, opening and using a Paypal account, improving listings, security, and billing and shipping.

The course will be taught in Room 104 at the Haraway Center. The cost of the course is $50, and the book will be available to purchase from the instructor the day of the class at a cost of $17.95.

Lifelong Learners to return to Bollinger Family Theatre

Back by popular demand! The Northwest Mississippi Community College Lifelong Learners will return to the Bollinger Family Theatre in Bruce on Saturday, March 25.
The Bollinger family draws hundreds to their popular Saturday night fun and wholesome performances of classic country, Southern gospel and patriotic music. "This is the only entertainment destination of its kind in this region," says Patricia Lowder, coordinator for Continuing Education.
The deadline to register for the trip is Monday, March 20. The fee is $25, which includes transportation and admission to the theatre. No refunds will be made after March 20.
Prior to the show, the group will stop for dinner at Harmon's Fish House, between Oxford and Bruce. The cost for dinner is not included in the trip fee.

February Reading Roundtable

The book "Nickel and Dimed: on (not) getting by in America" will be the subject of the February Reading Roundtable at Northwest Mississippi Community College. The book is by Barbara Ehrenerich, a highly educated woman who decided to research material for the book by taking several minimum wage jobs to see if a person can actually live on this wage. The Reading Roundtable will be held on Monday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. at the R.C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia Campus. Northwest offers beginner's computer class

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Continuing Education Division is offering "Basic Computer Concepts for the Beginner" on Saturday, March 25 and April 1. The class is designed for the person who has little or no previous computer experience. It will cover general computer use and terminology and teach participants basic skills in using Windows.

The class is being taught by Helen Williamson, and will meet on the Senatobia Campus in the Tunica Building in Lab 136 from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. each day. The fee for the class is $60. The class is worth 1.0 Continuing Education Units.

Burton Art Exhibit set

An upcoming art exhibit at Northwest Mississippi Community College will feature the work of Memphis artist Fred Burton. The exhibit will run Feb. 12-28 at the Northwest Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.

An opening will be held on Sunday, Feb. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. The public is invited to attend.

Burton has been a professor at the Memphis College of Art since 1987.

His paintings, drawings and woodcuts have been exhibited in Paris, London, New York City, Chicago, Houston, Kansas City and Orlando.

He has held artist residences at the Edward Albee Foundation in New York; the Michael Karolyi Foundation in France; Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic; the Tyron Guthrie Center in Ireland; the Millay Colony for the Arts in New York; the Ragdale Foundation in Illinois, the Woodstock School of Art in New York, and the Morris Graves Foundation in California.

Burton is listed in Who's Who in the Humanities, Who's Who Among America's Teachers, Who's Who in Tennessee Education, and in the 15th edition of Men of Achievement.
