The memory of three family members is being honored by the establishment of the Leslie, Paula and Hal Herring Endowed Scholarship through the Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation. The scholarship was established by Miriam "Mimi" Herring of Sardis, family and friends.

"We are pleased and grateful that Mrs. Herring and many others have turned the tragedy of the losses of three family members into a triumph for future generations of students who will be helped through the Herring endowment," said Sybil Canon, director of Development for Northwest. "It is a sacred privilege for the Northwest Foundation to be entrusted with these funds."

Leslie Herring was administrator of the University of Tennessee's William F. Bowld Hospital at the time of his death in April 1990. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from The University of Mississippi and a master's degree in health care administration from the University of Alabama.

He had served as administrator of the North Panola Regional Hospital and Nursing Center in Sardis from 1970 to 1981 when he joined Methodist Hospitals of Memphis as admnistrator for food, security, environment and other services. He joined Bowld in 1982.

Paula Herring was a workforce development coordinator for Northwest at the time of her death in March 2004. Following graduation from North Delta Academy, she received her bachelor's degree and had done advanced study at The University of Mississippi and additional study at the University of Hawaii.

Prior to joining the Workforce staff at Northwest, Herring held administrative positions with Methodist Hospital and at UT-Medical Center. She was also a Mary Kay consultant.

A 1982 graduate of North Delta Academy, Hal Herring was a member of the school's tennis team. Following graduation from high school, he worked for two years at Methodist Hospital before enrolling at Northwest as a business major. He died in May of his first semester at Northwest.

"Matching funds have been added to bring this scholarship up to an endowed status," said Canon. "The scholarship will be awarded to students with a demonstrated financial need."
