"Cooking Lessons," Northwest Mississippi Community College's first faculty and staff cookbook, is being sold to help students pay for their textbooks.

Textbooks are an expensive part of a college education and sometimes unforeseen circumstances create financial crises in the lives of our students. Thus, the proceeds from this cookbook will be placed in an account with the Northwest Foundation, and faculty members will make recommendations to a textbook committee to determine which students have the greatest need for assistance. The Textbook Assistance Program will begin in January.

"We're extremely grateful for the cooperation of faculty and staff for submitting recipes, and the book will serve as a keepsakethat will be a reminder of all the great people that work here," said Sybil Canon, director of Development.

"Cooking Lessons" provides yet another way for the Northwest Foundation to help students. The Foundation exists primarily for the purpose of providing scholarships for Northwest's students.

The idea for the cookbook came from Sandy Grisham, a social science instructor at Northwest who retired in 2004. From her idea, a committee was formed consisting of Grisham, Dr. Marilyn Bateman, Dr. Lucie Bridgforth, Sybil Canon, Kim Donahou, JoAn Franklin, Mitzi Nicholson, Jane Pegram, Sandra Slocum, Rhonda Still, Judy Weeks, Ellen Williams and Dolores Wooten.

The committee formed a cover design contest in which several people submitted cover designs. The one the committee chose was one by Nancy Patterson, assistant director of Public Relations. The cover design included a scan of a painting by alumna Robbie Patterson Boyd of Tupelo.

"Robbie was good enough to donate her painting entitled "Mildred's Preserves" for the cover," said Patterson.

The back cover contains an autumn photo of the James P. McCormick Administration Building by Public Relations Assistant Julie Bauer. The cookbooks are $15 and are available in the Foundation Office. Anyone interested may contact the Northwest Foundation office on the Senatobia campus as well as at the bookstores on all three campuses. If a cookbook needs to be mailed, the cost is $18.
