The Theta Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society at Northwest Mississippi Community College is not only a society of scholars, but also a society whose members are committed to community service.
The chapter's largest community service initiative - Project Graduation - will assist charitable organizations fighting illiteracy and hunger. The project's theme is "Feed a Body. Feed a Mind."
Now through May 6, chapter members will collect new and used books and non-perishable food items to aid three area organizations: HOPE (Helping Other People in Emergency) in Senatobia, DeSoto Sunrise Center in Southaven and the Boys & Girls Club of Sardis.
Collection bins have been placed in the McLendon Student Center between the college post office and Ranger Bookstore. Community contributions are encouraged.
Our Phi Theta Kappa students are committed to making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate," said Northwest chemistry instructor Dr. Kimberly Hamilton-Wims, the chapter's co-advisor. "Our mission is to make that difference one can of food and one book at a time."
Project Graduation will be the last community service project for many of the chapter's members who are scheduled to graduate from Northwest," she said.
Two commencement exercises are scheduled on May 14: 10 a.m. for Career-Technical students and 3 p.m. for Academic students. Both ceremonies will be held at Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus.
