Northwest Mississippi Community College student Clint Nolan of Hernando experiences the typical worries that come with being a college student. He also has a learning disorder that requires a personal assistant attend class and take notes for him.

Eighty-six-year-old Yozeline Lamb has assisted Nolan throughout his three years at Northwest's DeSoto Center. She is proud that Nolan will receive an associate's degree May 14 at the college's commencement ceremony.

"She is a very nice, very sweet, very Christian lady," Nolan said. "She has been a big help in the past few years helping me to stay on top of assignments. She is a real blessing to me and to the school."

Lamb, too, was recognized for her efforts April 22 at the college's annual Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony when President David Haraway and DeSoto Center Dean Richie Lawson presented her with an honorary associate's degree.

It is only the second honorary degree ever awarded by Northwest.

"We hired Ms. Lamb to come in and go to class with this young man," Lawson said. "She stood by him every step of the way."

"Clint has been a delight to work with," Lamb said. "And I want to thank (Northwest) for the opportunity to serve and help others."

Lamb moved to a house near DeSoto Center five years ago after living 44 years in Olive Branch. Soon afterward she applied for and received a part-time position in the center's main office.

"Getting the job at Northwest was one of the greatest blessings of my life," said Lamb, who still walks to work every day.

Lawson said: "She's become someone that we can't do without. Her work ethic is unbelievable. She's a tremendous asset to us."

Lamb was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Jackson. She graduated from Messick High in Memphis in 1934 and attended West Tennessee Teachers College (now The University of Memphis) for one year before the Great Depression forced her to drop out.

Seventy years later, Lamb has finally earned a degree.

"This has been one of the nicest experiences of my life," Lamb said.
