Northwest Mississippi Community College Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Donny Castle will be inducted into the college's Sports Hall of Fame May 27.

A mainstay on the Northwest coaching staff since 1979, Castle has coached in more than 1,100 baseball games during his career. As head coach, Castle owned a six-year record of 213-79-4 headed into this spring, including three MACJC north division championships and one MACJC state crown.

He served 19 years as an assistant to retired coach and athletic director Jim Miles.

A 10-year veteran of professional baseball, Castle played for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. A designated hitter, first baseman and outfielder, he had a .308 batting average in his first year in the majors.

As a high school star, Castle led Coldwater High to a state baseball championship in 1968. He earned 13 letters in three sports ­ football, basketball and baseball.

He attended Northwest before finishing his degree in business at Delta State University.

Former inductees of the Northwest Sports Hall of Fame will be present to welcome Castle and three other new inductees at the annual banquet, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.

Tickets for the event are $25. The deadline for reservations is Monday, May 17.
