ACT Preparation Workshop offered May 12 and 13

Northwest Mississippi Community College is offering an ACT Preparation Workshop on Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13 from 6-9 p.m. Deadline to register for the class is Friday, May 9 by noon.

The course provides an overview of the ACT format, followed by a review of verbal and mathematics fundamentals for solving typical test questions. Also to be discussed are management and test taking strategies. Previous students of this course have raised their scores significantly.

The course will be taught by Kim Haas and Kristie Waldrop. It will be held in the Physical Science Building on the Northwest campus in Senatobia. The cost of the course is $90, with the book included.

Spring Les Fauves sale set

Les Fauves, Northwest Mississippi Community College’s student art club, will hold its spring art sale Friday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.

"This sale has become a well-loved tradition on campus and in the community,” said Lawayne House, chairman of the Art Department.

Artwork from students will include pottery, paintings, drawings and more. Also featured will be work from Northwest art faculty including House, Eunika Rogers and Ashley Chavis. The three faculty members will also donate door prizes. The drawing will be held at the close of the sale.

Proceeds from the sale help art students with the expenses of exhibitions and with campus beautification projects.

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Fine Arts Division offers classes in the fundamentals of Drawing; Painting; Ceramics; Art History; and Computer Graphics for individuals seeking opportunities for a career in the arts or for personal enrichment.”

Reading Roundtable set April 29

Northwest Mississippi Community College’s April installment of Reading Roundtable will feature the book, “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult. The book will be presented by Crystal Giles, technical services librarian at Northwest. The session will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29 in the R. C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia campus.

The purpose of the program is to provide a forum for senior adults to read and discuss a variety of books during the course of each semester. Discussions will be led by faculty at Northwest.

Northwest Jazz Band to perform April 10

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Jazz Band will present “What is Hip?,” a spring concert program, on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus. Admission to the event is free.

According to John Ungurait, director of bands, this year’s program promises to be entertaining. The band will be performing such favorites as Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4,” “Hay Burner” by Sammy Nestico, “Alright, Okay, You Win,” by Sid Wyche and Mamie Watts, Chuck Mangione’s “Land of Make Believe” and the Tower of Power standard, “What is Hip?”

The saxophone section is made up of Robert Clayborn, Senatobia; Taylor Houston, Olive Brach; Daniel Waller,Batesville; Marlon Love; Hernando and Brent Ashmore, Grenada. Trumpets are Jon Baker, Senatobia; Angela Tabor, Hernando; Chris Sparks, Southaven, and John Rue, Water Valley. Trombones are Amanda Hand, and Amber Neal, both of Grenada; Tommy Jasmin and Preston White, both of Olive Branch, and Martin Warren of Memphis.

The rhythm section for the Jazz Band is David Coleman of Oxford and Evan Stinson of Senatobia on piano; Tommy Shroads of Batesville on bass guitar; Will Bryer of Southaven on guitar; Lamar Tedford of Bruce, drums; and T.J. Johnson of Ripley, Tenn. on Latin percussion.
