Northwest Jazz Bands concert scheduled April 18

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Jazz Bands will present their Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus. Admission to the concert is free.

The Northwest Jazz Band is under the direction of Howard Luttrell, assistant director of bands. The Northwest Jazz Lab Band is directed by John Ungurait, director of bands. According to Luttrell, both groups will perform music from various styles of jazz, from big band swing, to blues to jazz-rock.

The Northwest Jazz Band will perform such standards as "One O'clock Jump" by the legendary Count Basie, "Apple Honey" by Woody Herman and "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Louis Prima. The band will also perform two special selections. "Tiger Den Blues" was written by Russell Thomas, Jr., director of Jazz Studies at Jackson State University. The "Blues Brothers Revue" consists of music from the movie "The Blues Brothers."

"This year's jazz band is one of the best ever at Northwest and the concert should make for an exciting and entertaining evening for the audience," Luttrell said.

According to Ungurait, the Northwest Jazz Lab Band will perform several selections including the Higgins arrangement of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" by Albert Von Tizer. "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" by Robert Lamm of the rock group Chicago, "Stolen Moments" by Oliver Nelson, "Song for My Father" by Horace Silver, "My Foolish Heart" by Victor Young, "Bags' Groove" by Milt Jackson, and "Peaches" by Al Cobine will complete the Jazz Lab Band's program.

Saxophone players for the Jazz Band are Ryan Crihfield, Megan Peacock and Marlon Love, all of Hernando; Narada Snyder of Oxford; and Kenya Tyson of Coldwater. The trumpet section consists of Andrew Joslin and Ryan Joslin of Southaven; Colby Alford of Grenada; Zach Hardy of Hernando; and John Demo of Coldwater. The trombone section for the Jazz Band areTommy Shroads of Batesvilllle; Daniel Harris and Sean Sinquefield of Southaven and Davie Miller of Tunica. Members of the rhythm section are Johanna Becker of Arkabutla, piano; David Duke of Pearl, and Nick Merritt of Olive Branch, percussion; Cole Howell of Munford, Tenn., bass; and Steve Hatmaker and Josh Green, both of Southaven, guitar.

Members of the Northwest Jazz Lab Band are :on saxophone Michael Cox of Southaven; Rebekah Green of Independence, Joseph Abrams of Byhalia and Allison Childs of Water Valley. Trumpet players in the band are Jon Baker and Trip Lowder of Senatobia; Angela Tabor of Hernando; Stacy Speed of Horn Lake; and Brandon Champion of Olive Branch. Trombonists for the group are Jonathan Goodwin of Charleston; Mitch Bryant of Senatobia; and Marieo Jones of Coldwater. Members of the rhythm section are Valeria Hanks of Batesville, piano; Nathan Breckenridge of Southaven, bass; Jordan Becker of Arkabutla, guitar; Billy Walker of Hernando and Lamar Tedford of Bruce, drums.
