Kid's Kollege has something for everyone

Looking for an activity to keep kids busy this summer? The Division of Continuing Education at Northwest Mississippi Community College is sponsoring Kid's Kollege 2006 during the month of June on the Senatobia campus.
This year's camps will include a golf and tennis camp and two science camps. Spanish for Kids will teach basic Spanish language and culture, and Signing for Kids will cover the basic skills in American Sign Language. Other classes offered include Notes and Journal Writing for Kids, Pottery for Kids, Beaded Jewelry Making for Kids, Printmaking for Kids, Leather Crafting for Kids, Web Design for Kids, and Get Hooked on Crocheting.
Refund deadlines are one business day before class or camp begins. No refunds can be given on the day a class or camp begins. Refunds are given for camps or classes cancelled due to low enrollment, however. Intersession computer course offered at Northwest

Northwest Mississippi Community College is offering one intersession class entitled Microcomputer Application (CSC 1123). The class, which is worth three semester hours, will be held 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., May 15-19 on the Senatobia campus. The cost of the class is $240 and a $20 lab fee.
The class will cover the uses of spreadsheets and databases as applied to business, education and other environments using Microsoft Excel and Access.
Prerequisite for the course is Intro to Computers (CSC 1113) or software experience. The instructor is Amy Payne. Enrollment is limited to 18 so early registration is encouraged. For more information or to register for the class call 662-562-3235.

King named Outstanding Educator

Robert L. "Bobby" King (left), director of the Division of Science, receives a congratulatory handshake from Dr. Gary Lee Spears, Northwest Mississippi Community College president, for being named Outstanding College Educator by the Tate County Economic Development Foundation. Sophomore Art Exhibit at Northwest

Northwest student art exhibit to feature several kinds of media.
The Division of Fine Arts at Northwest Mississippi Community College is sponsoring an art exhibit of sophomore art students' works April 17-24 at the Northwest Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.
An opening will be held on Monday, April 17 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the gallery. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
According to Lawayne House, art instructor, media used in the exhibition includes oil paintings, drawings, pottery and advertising design.
Students who will have their works on display are: Krisanie Carpenter, Michael Guy, Kimberly Locke and Lee Nelson of Senatobia; Claudia Boyd and Nick Merritt of Olive Branch; Opal Fleming and Rachel Polk of Byhalia; Candace Hitt of Hernando; Kimberly Napier of Clarksdale; Shareena Smith of Starkville, and Jerry Trumble of Walls.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, call (662) 562-3399.

Northwest Symphonic Band will perform April 27

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Symphonic Band will present a Spring Concert on Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the Senatobia campus. Admission to the concert is free.
Director of Bands John Ungurait will conduct the group. Assistant Director of Bands Howard Luttrell will serve as assistant conductor.
The evening will begin with a performance by the Northwest Percussion Ensemble at 7 p.m. in the atrium of the Fine Arts Auditorium. Members of the ensemble are Nathan Gregory, Senatobia; Nick Merritt, Olive Branch; Brent Garriga, Pearl; Jonathon WIlliams, Walls; Lamar Tedford, Bruce; Jay Rodgers, Nicholas Newson, and Robert Hibbler Jr., all of Coldwater; Billy Walker, Hernando; Kent Falkner, Holly Springs; Julia Williams, Southaven and Jonathan Pritchard, Red Banks.
The concert will feature a variety of music including the beautiful "Shenandoah" by Frank Ticheli. This work centers on the timelessness and energy of a rolling river. The mood of the piece ranges from quiet reflection to profound exaltation.
Aaron Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man," pays tribute to the man who shares the labors, sorrows and hope of those who strive for victory during the turmoil of World War II.
"On An American Spiritual" by David R. Holsinger, based on the Easter spiritual "Were You There?" and Robert W. Smith's "Songs of Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Sky," dedicated to the East Tennessee State Wind Ensemble, will also be included. The concert will end with the rousing "Rolling Thunder" by Henry Fillmore.

Annual Art Sale set at Northwest

Northwest Mississippi Community College will have its annual Les Fauves spring art sale on Friday, April 28 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.
The art sale is being held by the Les Fauves campus art club, which functions to promote art in the area. Club membership is open to anyone who is taking at least one course in the Art Department.
“We moved the sale to the last Friday in April due to exams,” said Terry Pegram, art instructor. The sale is traditionally held the first Friday in May.
The event will feature paintings, pottery, photography, and mixed media pieces from art department students and faculty.
Door prizes will also be awarded, including pieces from art instructors Pegram, Lane Tutor and Lawayne House.

Rabies and Heartworm Screening Day set for April 22 at Northwest

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Vet Tech program is offering a Rabies and Heartworm Screening Day on Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m.-noon in the A.P. Fatherree Building on the Senatobia campus.
The event is open to the public. The cost of the shot and screening is $10 in cash only. No checks or credit cards will be accepted. Only dogs will be screened for heartworms, but both dogs and cats can receive rabies shots.

Reading Roundtable for April

Living a Life That Matters by Rabbi Harold Kushner will be the topic for the Northwest Mississippi Community College April Reading Roundtable. The discussion will be led by Dr. Chuck Strong, director of the Social Science Division. The event will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 24 in the R. C. Pugh Library on the Senatobia campus.
Kushner is probably best remembered for his book When Bad Things Happen to Good People. He continues to write very meaningful books. This profound book is about being well by doing good.
All participants must fill out a registration form. Those who wish to receive a copy of the book being discussed should attach a payment of $5 to their registration form. If participants already own a copy of the book, or wish to get it from another source, they will still need to register for the session.

Precious Metal Clay Jewelry class set

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Continuing Education Division is offering a Precious Metal Clay Jewelry Workshop April 20- May 18 on the main campus in Senatobia.
This beginning workshop will introduce students to an exciting new material from Japan. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is made of particles of fine silver, a nontoxic binder and water. PMC can be rolled, shaped. and textured much the same way as ceramic clay. It can be fired in a kiln and will result in a piece of fine silver jewelry. The instructor will fire the pieces and give ideas for finishes and polishing. Ceramic or jewelry experience not necessary, but it would be helpful. Students will make approximately five pieces of jewelry.
The course will be taught at the Workforce Development Center Classroom in Tate Hall. The time is 6-8:30 p.m. The fee is $60 for the course, and $90 supply fee for new students. This fee includes supplies, beginning tools, and firing.

College celebrates Tony Roberson Endowment

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation Office treated the physical plant and transportation staffs to a pizza lunch March 28 to celebrate the endowment of The Tony Roberson Endowed Scholarship. Roberson, a longtime physical plant employee, died in August, 2003. Members of the Roberson family on hand for the celebration were (second and third from left) Daniel and Rachel Roberson Lance, Kathy Roberson, and Ryan Roberson.

NWCC physical plant and helps with college endowments

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation office treated the physical plant and transportation staffs to a pizza lunch March 28 to celebrate their continued support of scholarships through the college's payroll deduction plan.
Scholarships that these employees have played a part in establishing are The Taylor and Anita Fore Endowment,The Tony Roberson Endowment, The James Jackson Endowment, The Chris Brannon Endowment, and The Russell Hadskey Endowment.
