Northwest offers several continuing education classes in June

aslThe Division of Continuing Education at Northwest Mississippi Community College is offering several classes on the Senatobia campus this summer. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for each class. Most classes will be held on the Senatobia campus.

American Sign Language for Beginners  (2.0 CEUs) – This class presents an American Sign Language class geared toward those who wish to learn America’s third most commonly used language for work, home or enrichment.  This class will offer students the essentials needed to engage in signed conversations and will cover an introduction to signing grammar, Deaf culture, fingerspelling, as well as the most commonly used vocabulary signs.   In this class, students will also receive information about how to carry on with self-instruction in order to maintain your signing skills for a lifetime. The class will be offered June 2 – 5 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The fee is $90 and the class will be held in the Math and Science Building, Room 334. The deadline to register is May 29.

 Basic Computers  (1.5 CEUs) – This class is designed for adults who have little or no previous computer experience. General computer use and terminology will be discussed as participants learn basic skills in using Windows 7.  This class is ideal for seniors who are interested in learning how to use the computer. The class will be offered June 9 – 12 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The fee is $90 and the class will be held in the Berry Building, Room 104.  The deadline to register is May 29.

Spanish for Educators  (3.0 CEUs) – This class is designed to introduce basic conversational Spanish to educators. It will be packed full of “survival Spanish” for the school setting. Pronunciation and grammar will be emphasized, and a variety of group activities will be used to facilitate learning. The final class meeting, the group will dine at a local Mexican restaurant and be required to order their meal in Spanish.  If there are enough students interested in an advanced class, an opportunity to continue this class and earn an additional 2.0 CEUs will be available the following week.  The class will be offered June 9 – 13 from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The fee is $70 and the class will be held in the Math and Science Building, Room 334. The deadline to register is June 5.

Getting Your Book Published  (0.5 CEUs) – It’s a lot easier to publish a book nowadays.  The options include publishing ebooks as well as paperbacks.  In this hands-on course, students will learn how to do get a book published and more.These are the topics that will be covered; completing the draft, editing & proofing, producing a Kindle eBook, producing a paperback book, book covers, and marketing & pricing. The class will be offered June 14 and 21 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The fee is $50 and the class will be held in the McLendon Center, Room 202. The deadline to register is June 11.

 Microsoft Word*  (1.5 CEUs) – Students will learn how to use a lot of the functions in Microsoft Word.  Some of the things that will be taught will be changing appearance, mail merge, working with charts, tables, columns and graphics, editing and proofreading and using templates from Microsoft’s web site. The class will be offered June 16 – 19 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The fee is $90 and the deadline to register is June 5. *This class will be held at the Batesville Enterprise Center, located at 275 Nosef Drive in Batesville.

Creating a Photo Book  (1.5 CEUs) – In this class, students will learn how to scan photos and transfer photos from a camera to the computer. They will also learn to download, install, and learn how to work with the photo book software.  Students will also be able to get information on how to compile a photo book and use practical yet creative tips for the perfect writing and layout to make the photo book look both professional and personal.  Students will also learn how to get the photo book printed so that you can show it off to your friends and family. The class will be offered June 23 – 26 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The fee is $90 and the class will be held in the Berry Building, Room 104. The deadline to register is June 12.

Classroom Presentation  (0.5 CEUs) – Effective communication between teachers and students is one key to success in the classroom. This course will provide both theory and practice in the art of verbal and nonverbal communication. By the end of the course students will have learned not only the concept of effective communication, but also a way to practice it in everyday life. The class will be offered June 24 – 25 from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The fee is $60 and the class will be held in the Fine Arts Building, Room 126. The deadline to register is June 17.

To register for a class, drop by the Continuing Education office or visit the Northwest website at www.northwestms.edu and download the Continuing Education/Kid’s Kollege brochure which contains a registration form that can be returned to the office by mail or in person.

Registration fees are refunded in full if the class for which and enrollment is full, the class is cancelled or the student notifies the office of Continuing Education prior to the registration deadline.  Class fees may be paid by cash, check or credit card.
