Northwest Practical Nursing students bring home awards from state convention

PNconventionThe Northwest Mississippi Community College Practical Nursing students from all campuses attended the Annual Mississippi Licensed Practical Nursing Convention on April 9-11th in Biloxi.

Northwest’s Practical Nursing program is available on the Senatobia, Ashland, DeSoto and Oxford campuses.

According to Jennifer Lance, practical nursing program director, the theme for the convention was:  “LPNs are the Superheroes of Nursing in Mississippi.”

“The convention is a great opportunity for the students to listen to a variety of lectures on nursing topics and stay abreast of the ever changing world of nursing. This also allowed them time to network with other students from schools throughout the state and explore their options for job opportunities after graduation,” Lance said.

This was the first time students from Northwest participated in the statewide competitive events. Northwest students took home five awards.

Abbi Woods of Senatobia won first place for the poster contest. Taylor Kidd, Shelby Mayo-Todd, Rickeylor Dixon and Hope Hopper all of Senatobia; Heather Seat of Olive Branch and Amber Allison of Hernando won fifth place in the poster contest. David Lentz of Senatobia won third place in the Body Structure and Function, “Name that Body Part” competition. Renita Couch of Robinsonville won fourth place in the body structure and function, “Name that Body Part” competition.  The class from the Senatobia Campus won first place in the statewide Community Service event.

Last November, the Practical Nursing students along with Tate County Sheriff’s Department, Senatobia Police Department and Walmart held a food drive for families in need in Tate County. They were able to collect enough food to feed over 20 families as well as over $800 in donations. With that money each family got a large ham and a $20 gift card to Walmart.

“The students worked very hard and even used their off time to help with the deliveries and anything else that was needed. These students depict what teamwork, compassion and dedication is all about,” Lance said.

Liberty McClesky of Byhalia presented the Community Service Portfolio for the class.
