The Mathematics Division of Northwest Mississippi Community College recently hosted The Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics Junior High Math Competition. On Feb. 28, students from several district schools traveled to the Senatobia campus for testing.
Students from Ashland Middle School, Coffeeville High School, Tunica Academy, Strayhorn Jr. High School, DeSoto Central, Pope School, Marshall Academy, Senatobia Jr. High School, Independence Jr. High School, Magnolia Heights School and North Panola Jr. High School participated in the event.
The first place 7th grade winner was Katie Pilgrim of Senatobia. She is the daughter of Mark Pilgrim and attends Strayhorn Jr. High School. The second place 7th grade winner, MaKenzie MIller of Senatobia, attends Independence Jr. High School. She is the daughter of Keith Miller.
The first place 8th grade winner was Abigail Ransom of Southaven who attends DeSoto Central. She is the daughter of Stuart Kimberly Ransom. Raven Ruggerio, daughter of George and Stephanie Ruggerio of Southaven is the second place 8th grade winner. She also attends DeSoto Central. The winners will now compete at the state level test.
According to Charlotte Alexander, division director of mathematics, the students were first tested at their individual schools, and the four top scorers from 7th and 8th grades were sent to Northwest for the district level test, which was administered on Feb. 28. “We are always excited to have representatives from the area junior high schools compete in the district level competition here at Northwest. The teachers who train these young math scholars are to be commended for a job well done,” Alexander said.
