Northwest hosts NCLEX workshop for area nursing faculty

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Division of Nursing and Kaplan Nursing hosted an item writing and NCLEX preparedness workshop for area nursing faculty on Feb. 21 on the Senatobia campus. The workshop was presented by Barbara Irwin, executive director of Kaplan Nursing.

The purpose of the workshop was to assist nursing faculty who face the challenges of ensuring student success after the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN Examination (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) was raised in April 2013.

Irwin addressed item writing, clinical reasoning and curricular models.  Additionally, she led an interactive discussion for the 50 nurse educators in attendance.

Mrs. Irwin has helped students achieve success with nursing licensure for over 30 years.  She developed the Kaplan NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN prep courses, which are utilized by over 80,000 nurses each year.  Over a million students have utilized the patented Decision Tree methodology, which is the foundation of Kaplan Nursing’s success.  The critical thinking framework not only assists students to prepare for NCLEX, but also provides a foundation, which guides decision making at the bedside.  She is the co-author of “NCLEX-RN Strategies for the Registered Nursing Licensing Examination” and “NCLEX-PN Strategies, Practice and Review.” She presents webinars and international seminars for both nursing faculty and students on a variety of topics such as critical thinking, NCLEX readiness, item writing , test construction and other areas related to nursing education. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Oklahoma and Master of Science in Nursing Education from Kaplan University.
